The biggest match in world football is finally here. Defending champions Argentina will meet Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday at a time when both countries are chasing history.
Argentina will be the first team since Brazil (1958 and 1962) to defend the FIFA World Cup title. A victory would also give La Albiceleste their fourth World Cup title win after 1978, 1986 and 2022, which would put them in the league of Germany and Italy as the second most successful nations in World Cup history.
Spain are hoping to end a 16-year wait for football's biggest prize. La Roja won their only World Cup title in 2010 and now have a chance to return to the summit of international football with one of the youngest and most exciting squads in the tournament.
Spain's road to the final.
Spain have probably been the most consistent team of the tournament. They reached the final after beating Saudi Arabia, Uruguay, Austria, Portugal, Belgium and France. Luis de la Fuente’s side has only conceded one goal in the tournament which came in the quarter-finals against Belgium.
Spain is the perfect example of disciplined defence, fluid midfield and explosive attack at the 2026 World Cup.
Argentina Survived Several Scares
Argentina’s journey has been far more dramatic. Lionel Scaloni’s side has made some remarkable comebacks in the round of 16, including a 13-minute late comeback against Egypt.
The champions then edged past England 2-1 in a tense semi-final, in which Lionel Messi provided two crucial assists and Lautaro Martinez scored the dramatic stoppage-time winner.
Spain vs Argentina Head-to-Head Record
Despite being two of football's biggest nations, Spain and Argentina have met only once in FIFA World Cup history.
That was at the 1966 World Cup group stage when Argentina defeated Spain 2-1.
Across all official and friendly matches, the rivalry is perfectly balanced:
Total matches: 14
Spain wins: 6
Argentina wins: 6
Draws: 2
Their most recent meeting in 2018 in Madrid was an international friendly when Spain won 6-1.
Messi vs Lamine Yamal Headlines The Final
The most interesting story of the final will be the meeting of two generations.
Lionel Messi, one of football's greatest players who has been in the top 10 all his life and is regarded as one of the greatest ever, could be playing for Argentina in the final World Cup match of his great career.
Standing opposite him is Spain's teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who has been one of the world's brightest young stars in football and has performed so well in the tournament.
A battle between the legendary Argentine and the 19-year-old Spanish prodigy is expected to be one of the key moments of the tournament.
Historic Halftime Show
The 2026 FIFA World Cup final will also make history with the tournament’s first Super Bowl-style halftime show in a way that is unique to the tournament.
The entertainment lineup will include Madonna, Shakira, Justin Bieber, BTS and Burna Boy, making it one of the biggest musical events ever staged during a FIFA World Cup final.
