One of the most successful partnerships in the history of Indian Premier League has ended. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and long-time head coach Stephen Fleming have mutually agreed to part ways and end a 17-year partnership which has turned Chennai Super Kings into one of the world's all-time best teams in T20 cricket.
The decision, announced on July 13, 2026, ends an era that delivered unprecedented success for the five-time IPL champions. Fleming, who became head coach in 2009 after he played for CSK as a player during the IPL season in 2008, leaves a mark which very few coaches in franchise cricket can match.
Fleming, along with the legendary Dhoni, built a culture of consistency, trust and calm leadership. And that was the backbone of Chennai Super Kings’ success in the team over such a long time and through so many generations of players, and so many years of outstanding performance.
CSK won five Indian Premier League titles and two Champions League T20 trophies during his time at the club, making their way to the playoffs 12 times and reaching the IPL final on 10 occasions. The team developed a reputation for having experienced players as well as tactical players and that they could perform under pressure, which is a trait the Dhoni-Fleming combination were able to do.
But after consecutive bad seasons in 2025 and 2026, Fleming and the franchise management discussed how the team would go forward. Talks between them concluded that it was the right time for them to close their partnership.
CSK Director Rupa Gurunath also expressed gratitude to Fleming for his leadership of the franchise.
She also praised the former New Zealand captain for being instrumental to the team’s cricketing philosophy and its identity, professionalism and relentless pursuit of excellence for nearly two decades.
Fleming’s impact went beyond match-day tactics. He helped develop a stable team environment, young talent and one of the strongest dressing room cultures in franchise cricket. His calm temperament and strategic clarity earned him respect from players, opponents and cricket experts alike.
With Fleming’s departure, Chennai Super Kings are in the midst of one of the biggest changes in the franchise's history. As the management will now have to take stock of its cricket activities as it prepares for the next IPL mega auction, the team has already begun re-evaluating its cricket operations in light of Fleming’s departure, which will most likely mean it will need to put in place a coaching structure for the next IPL mega auction and now has a more aggressive approach to building a coaching team that is going to take the next generation of the team.
Among the names are former India batter Hemang Badani who has been tipped as a good candidate to join the new coaching staff. No official appointment has been made yet but the speculation is going to increase in the coming weeks as CSK finalises its plans.
The end of the Fleming era also raises questions about the future direction of the franchise, especially with Dhoni's playing career coming to an end after all the hard work of Dhoni and Fleming as one of the greatest coaching partnerships in T20 history, and a franchise that changed the course of cricket in all formats while at the same time making a mark on the world of cricket for sure.
Although Stephen Fleming's journey with Chennai Super Kings has come to an end, his impact on the team is likely to last. His name will forever be associated with CSK's golden days and so his exit is one of the most significant moments in IPL history.
