After years of performance in domestic cricket, Madhya Pradesh all-rounder Saransh Jain finally gets the dream of every Indian cricketer. The 33-year-old off-spinning all-rounder gets the call-up to the Indian Test team for the two-match series against Sri Lanka starting August 15. Jain has made the 15-member team as a temporary replacement in the absence of injured Washington Sundar.
Saransh Jain’s success has been largely made up of domestic cricket, unlike many of the modern cricketers who have been propelled by the IPL. Season after season he has quietly delivered match-winning performances without the attention that cricket fans want and has earned himself respect on the Indian domestic circuit.
Jain recently toured Sri Lanka with the India A side and further supported his case for national selection. Although he performed poorly in the first unofficial Test, he came back in the second match and took 6 wickets and scored 70. His all-round performance attracted the attention of the selectors and got him the opportunity to represent India.
The records he has in his first-class career show the value he brings to any team. Jain has scored 2,223 runs at an average of 31.75 and taken 188 wickets at 27.30 in 54 matches and he is not only a bowler who can contribute with the bat but what makes him a genuine all-rounder who can make an impact in both departments.
Saransh Jain’s story that is very touching in so many aspects goes way beyond cricket. In an interview with ESPN Cricinfo, he told a very emotional story from 2014. He was on a Madhya Pradesh club tour of Australia at the time and the family did not tell him that his father had undergone facial surgery after being diagnosed with cancer. They wanted him to stay focused on his cricket and to not think about home. Only when he returned from Australia did Jain find out it was true.
His father Subodh Jain had a note with him, *“I am fine now, son. If you just play better, I will get well sooner.”* Saransh’s career was motivated by those words.
Cricket has always been part of the Jain family. Subodh Jain himself represented Madhya Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy and once dreamed of playing for India. But his son has carried the family’s dream to the international stage. Saransh also trained at Indore’s Vijay Club with current India batter and Madhya Pradesh captain Rajat Patidar, which shows the cricketing culture that shaped his career.
Since he made his Ranji Trophy debut in the 2014–15 season, Saransh has represented Madhya Pradesh and Central Zone and Rest of India in the big domestic competitions. His consistency has made him one of the best performers in Indian domestic cricket.
His 2025–26 Ranji Trophy season was particularly impressive. Jain was Madhya Pradesh's top run-scorer with 518 runs in seven matches at an average of 57.55 and a century and three half-centuries. He also took 30 wickets at an average of 20.43, which was the second-highest wicket-taker behind Kumar Kartikeya in the team. Jain has scored 553 runs and taken 38 wickets in 47 List A matches, while in T20 cricket he has picked up 18 wickets in 20 matches for an economy of 6.25.
Saransh Jain’s selection is an example of the patience, hard work, and consistent performance of Indian cricketers still being relevant. His story of the Ranji Trophy grind and the Indian dressing room is one for every domestic cricketer who is still struggling to get a call-up from the national team.
