- Sleeper Class
- Second Class
However, the facility is not available for passengers travelling in:
- AC 3-Tier
- AC 3 Economy
- AC Chair Car
These classes have a maximum luggage limit of the same luggage allowance as that available on free travel and no baggage booking is allowed.
Class-Wise Free Luggage Allowance
Indian Railways has specified the following free luggage limits:
- AC First Class: 70 kg free (maximum 150 kg with additional charges)
- First Class/AC 2-Tier: 50 kg free (maximum 100 kg)
- Sleeper Class: 40 kg free (maximum 80 kg)
- Second Class: 35 kg free (maximum 70 kg)
- AC 3-Tier / AC Chair Car: 40 kg free (maximum permitted limit remains 40 kg)
Passengers who exceed the free allowance but stay within the maximum allowed limit must pay excess luggage charges according to Railway rules.
Excess Luggage Charges
The Railway has set a minimum excess luggage charge of ₹30, which will be calculated in 10 kg slabs. Charges are also subject to a minimum chargeable distance of 50 kilometres.
When ticket inspections are conducted, passengers who have undeclared excess baggage may end up in trouble if they carry more than the allowed amount.
Luggage Size Restrictions
In addition to weight limits, passengers need to comply with luggage dimension regulations.
Generally accepted luggage dimensions include:
- 100 cm × 60 cm × 25 cm for standard trunks, suitcases, and boxes.
Passengers travelling in AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car must adhere to a smaller size limit of:
- 55 cm × 45 cm × 22.5 cm
Oversized luggage may need to be booked separately through the parcel service.
How to Book Excess Luggage Online
Indian Railways has made the booking process simple:
Visit the Indian Railways Parcel Portal or use IRCTC. Enter your journey details such as the origin, destination, train number and luggage. The system automatically shows:

- Estimated charges

Submit the application online and print the e-forwarding note. Present your luggage at the parcel office of the originating station for final weighing and payment. Collect the Railway Receipt (RR) which is required to claim your luggage at the destination.
