On March 1, 2026, a milestone in the maritime journey of Maharashtra will be met. The Mumbai–Konkan ferry service will bring Mumbai to Vijaydurg in Sindhudurg district, requiring only seven hours for a trip. Operated by M2M Ferries with the help of Maharashtra Maritime Board, this project is hailed as the state’s longest and most ambitious sea route to date.
The ferry service is the vision of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. It has become a reality thanks to the dedicated efforts of Cabinet Minister Nitesh Rane. For years, Konkan had long stretches of road travel – frequently over ten hours – for travelers. The ferry now provides a quicker and more comfortable alternative along with growing travel and trade to the coast.
The M2M ferry is capable of carrying passengers as well as vehicles so it is a real Ro‑Ro (roll‑on, roll‑off) service.
- Passenger capacity: 626
- Car capacity: 40
- Bike capacity: 25
This means travel for families is no longer limited to their car and driving will lead them from there into Konkan towns making them easier and more convenient. The ferry carries an excellent deal of modern amenities, safety, and vistas of the Arabian Sea along the route.
Launching this service will revolutionize travel to Konkan. What had been a fatigue-inducing one-day road trip has turned into a seamless seven‑hour adventure on the sea. Tourists who go to beaches, forts, and temples in Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri districts will be greatly enhanced. Travelers may hit local businesses, especially in transport and tourism businesses, particularly within hospitality and transportation sectors, and such business.
The ferry also enhances Maharashtra’s maritime infrastructure, further underlining the state’s readiness to develop coastlines. A direct link to Konkan, the project relieves congestion and provides a green solution for transportation by road, which is usually long as well as on car.
The Mumbai–Konkan ferry service is not only a transportation project; it is a symbol of progress and vision. With its capacity to transport hundreds of passengers and vehicles, the ferry marks a fresh start to the wave of connectivity along the coast. As the service launches on March 1, 2026, it will provide joy for travellers, offer opportunities to locals, and pride in the maritime past of Maharashtra.
