Suzuki has taken another important step toward expanding its electric vehicle portfolio with the Vision E-Sky prototype recently spotted being road tested in Europe. The camouflaged test mule is the clearest evidence that the compact electric hatchback is on the way, with a global release date in 2027.
Originally presented as a concept at the Japan Mobility Show, the Vision E-Sky represents Suzuki's vision for an affordable and urban-oriented electric vehicle that fills the market's needs for compact EVs. The new spy pictures show that, while the production model still has some of that very special look of the concept, with practical features it is now ready to go into mass production.
Production Model Takes Shape
Though the prototype is heavily camouflaged, a number of design changes are noticeable in the original version.
The sleek full-width LED light bar that has been present on the concept has been replaced with temporary prototype headlamps, leaving the lighting elements still in development. Despite the disguise, the compact EV retains its tall, upright stance and narrow body, very well-suited for city driving.
The original Vision E-Sky concept measured 3,395 mm in length, 1,475 mm in width and 1,625 mm in height, making it shorter and narrower than many entry-level hatchbacks and taller than the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso.
Other visible updates are conventional pull-type door handles that replace the flush-mounted units, and door-mounted outside rearview mirrors instead of the futuristic camera-style mirrors on the concept. The prototype also features aerodynamic alloy wheels, a large lower air intake integrated into the front bumper, vertically positioned taillamps, and bumper-mounted reflectors.
Suzuki seems to have kept the minimalist design language of the concept while introducing production-friendly elements.
Minimalist Interior Expected
The latest spy photographs do not show the cabin, but the original concept had a clean and futuristic interior.
It featured a floating dashboard with two digital displays, a stripped-down dashboard layout, and a squircle-shaped steering wheel. The production model would be more comfortable for four occupants rather than five.
Expected Battery and Range
Suzuki has yet to officially disclose complete technical specifications for the Vision E-Sky.
But the company has stated that the concept is expected to deliver a driving range of more than 270 kilometres on a single charge. Some estimates are a 30-35 kWh battery pack for the production versions, which strike a good balance between affordability and practical urban driving capabilities.
The small battery size would position the Vision E-Sky as a city-based EV for first-time electric vehicle buyers.
Could Inspire Maruti Suzuki's Affordable EV
The Vision E-Sky could be very important in Maruti Suzuki’s future electric vehicle strategy in India.
According to reports, the company is developing a low-end electric hatchback, internally codenamed Y2V, expected to come out in 2028. The new model could share its platform and technology with the Vision E-Sky, offering affordable electric mobility options to buyers in India.
The Y2V will be part of Maruti Suzuki's ambitious plan to introduce six electric vehicles by FY2031, across a lot of segments from small hatchbacks to SUVs.
If launched in India, the production version of the Vision E-Sky or its Maruti equivalent will compete directly against compact EVs such as the MG Comet EV, giving shoppers another attainable electric alternative.
With testing now in Europe, Suzuki seems to be moving steadily toward bringing its smallest electric vehicle into the world market and increasing its position in the rapidly growing electric vehicle market.
