Tesla has expanded its retail presence in India with the opening of a new Experience Centre in Chennai on Friday, September 25. The outlet is the sixth retail location in the country and its third in South India, after Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
The Chennai outlet will create a better physical presence of Tesla in Tamil Nadu as the company continues to grow sales, service and customer service in India. The company is currently selling the Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive and Model YL All-Wheel Drive in India.
According to The New Indian Express, the Model Y and Model YL are available in India from Rs 50.89 lakh. Tesla has also announced financing options, with an EMI of Rs 39,990 and a down payment of Rs 6 lakh for the vehicles.
Chennai Becomes Tesla's Third South India Outlet
The new Experience Centre provides Tesla with a boost to its presence in the southern region, in which it has already established stores in Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The company had previously declared plans to expand its service, body shop and charging network in Chennai as part of a bigger India expansion strategy.
The Chennai site also comes as Tesla looks to establish sales in India. In 2026, Tesla said it sold more than 600 vehicles in the country, and Tamil Nadu accounted for 38 units then. Electric vehicle sales across Tamil Nadu had crossed 19,700 units in the state in the year, according to industry reports.
The Chennai Experience Centre at Tesla will give customers in the state the chance to see the company's vehicles and get to know the technology and ownership services on offer.
Tesla also follows a direct-to-consumer sales model in India, and customers in India can order vehicles online rather than purchasing from a dealership network. The company also has been building up its charging and after-sales support infrastructure.
Model Y And Model YL Prices, Features
Tesla currently offers two versions of the Model Y family in India.
The 2026 Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive is priced from Rs 50.89 lakh. The five-seater has 2,138 litres of storage space and can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in 5.9 seconds. It is claimed to run up to 500 km in the WLTP test cycle.
The Model YL All-Wheel Drive is a larger option with three rows and seating for six passengers. It is priced at Rs 61.99 lakh and has up to 2,539 litres of cargo space. Tesla claims a 0 to 100 kmph acceleration time of five seconds and a WLTP range of up to 681 km.
Both models can be ordered through Tesla's website, and deliveries can be made across India. The company also provides home charging service in several states.
Tesla Expands Service And Charging Network
Tesla is also working to develop its service and charging infrastructure in India along with its retail expansion.
The company had previously announced plans to build service and body shops in some cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Ahmedabad. Tesla has also been developing Supercharger and destination charging infrastructure to connect major Indian cities and support longer-distance travel.
At the opening of Tesla India's Chennai outlet, Tesla India country head Sharad Agarwal said the company is a technology-oriented business that works across AI and robotics. He also mentioned Tesla’s work on its Optimus humanoid robot and Cybercab autonomous vehicle concept.
For Chennai customers, Tesla has also made service and collision repair capabilities available in Poonamallee through a Tesla-Approved Collision Center, the company said.
The opening of the Chennai Experience Centre is just the beginning of Tesla's gradual expansion in Indian operations. With many outlets in various cities in India and more charging and service infrastructure planned, the company is seeking to grow its customer base and support network while still selling fully imported vehicles in the Indian market.
