Chikkamagaluru: Over 150 Arecanut Plants Cut Down Over Suspected Personal Enmity in Tarikere

More than 150 arecanut plants, each around four years old, have been cut down by unidentified miscreants in Karakuchi village of Tarikere taluk in Karnataka’s Chikkamagaluru district. The farming community was concerned as the damaged plantation is expected to begin giving a substantial harvest in the next year.

The incident occurred on the farm of a grower named Sannappa on roughly three-quarters of an acre of land. The plants were cut down overnight, and the farmer could lose crops and his future income, the report says.

Over 150 Four-year-old Arecanut Plants Destroyed

The damaged plantation was established after years of effort and investment. Arecanut is an important commercial crop for farmers in many parts of Karnataka, and growers typically invest in raising young plants before they grow into productive plants.

This time, the plants were about four years old and were expected to provide a good harvest from the next year. Their destruction has affected the plantation not only but also the farmer’s expectations for future agricultural earnings as well.

The destruction was discovered after the plants were found cut down; the incident was reported.

Personal Enmity Suspected

I suspect that the reason behind the arecanut plants' destruction was probably personal. But the motive has not been established yet, and the allegations will need to be researched in relation to the police investigation.

The incident has once again been a reminder of farmers’ vulnerability, whose livelihoods depend on crops that require years of investment and take years to produce returns. A mature or near-mature plantation can be damaged, and crop damage can cause a loss well beyond the price of replacement plants.

For small and marginal farmers, such destruction may mean spending on seedlings, labour, maintenance and irrigation, as well as a delay in earning income from the affected land.

A case has also been registered at Lakkavalli Police Station in connection with the incident. Police will investigate the cause of destruction and find out the culprits.

The investigation will help determine whether personal rivalry was involved and whether there was a potential other motive for the alleged act. In the document, there were no details of the complaint, suspects, or estimated loss.

This incident raises concerns among farmers

The destruction of more than 150 arecanut plants is a serious setback for the affected grower, especially since the plantation was approaching the stage when it was expected to generate a better return.

Agricultural plantations are long-term investments. Farmers need to prepare the land, plant seedlings, water and add nutrients to the soil, and protect the crop from pests, diseases and other risks to their crops. If plants are deliberately destroyed, recovering the investment can take years.

The Karakuchi village episode also shows the need for the protection of agricultural property and the reporting of damage to the authorities. Farmers who do find damage to their crops can preserve photos and other evidence and share information with investigators.

At the time of the police investigation, it remains to be answered who cut down the plants, what motivated the alleged act, and whether the farmer is entitled to a legal remedy for the loss of them.

The four-year-old plantation has since been destroyed, and the grower now faces more uncertainty with the plants close to their productive stage. The Lakkavalli police investigation will be crucial to establish the truth behind the incident.
