Indian National Among Two Killed in Attack on Saudi Arabia’s Dammam Airport; Two Indians Injured

Two Indian nationals were among eight people who were killed in an attack at King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday night, the Indian Embassy said. The deaths and injuries of Indian nationals have raised fears for civilians and international residents in the area with Saudi authorities assessing the casualties and the condition of those who are being treated.

According to the Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation, eight people were injured. The injured included two Indian citizens, two Yemeni citizens, two Bangladeshi citizens, one Nepalese citizen and a Saudi national. Some of the injured were in serious condition, the authority said. The information provided did not indicate how many people were critically injured or gave a detailed profile of their medical condition. The status of those suffering from the attack will be updated by the authorities in the coming weeks.

As a result, the death of an Indian citizen has been in the spotlight in India with the involvement of families of Indians living and working in Saudi Arabia. Because Indian expatriates are a large part of the country’s economy (and for some part the other country) there is a lot of concern in India and abroad about an attack that can be associated with Indian casualties. The two Indian nationals who have been injured are among those to be closely monitored and their condition and recovery will be well-understood as we know more.

The Indian embassy said that one Indian national was among the two killed and two Indian nationals were injured. In response to information from Saudi authorities of the incident at the airport, the announcement to the airport was made. The number and nationalities of the victims were given though few facts about the nature of the attack have been revealed in the information available so far. The attack was carried out in a very accurate way, the identities of the victims were identified, damage done and if any additional security measures have been introduced at the airport.

King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province is an important aviation facility for domestic and international travellers. A security incident at a big airport can raise questions about passenger safety, airport operations and the protection of people working or travelling through the facility, but the extent to which Wednesday’s incident affected flight schedules or normal airport operations was not outlined in the information.

The number of casualties from a variety of nationalities is a testament to the international nature of the incident. The wounded included citizens and residents of Saudi Arabia, India, Yemen, Bangladesh and Nepal -- all groups that live and work in the country. The investigators will be trying to find out the reasons and evidence of the attack and would bring the information from them if we have information about it.

For Indian nationals in Saudi Arabia, the immediate concern will be the health of the injured and the assistance to families of those killed. The Indian Embassy may provide further consular updates when verified details emerge. Relatives seeking information should seek official communications from the embassy and Saudi authorities rather than unverified social media reports.

As of Thursday, one Indian national had been confirmed dead and two Indian nationals were among eight injured in the attack on King Fahd International Airport. With some injured people still in serious condition, the focus is on their treatment and recovery as well as the government’s investigation of what happened and if there need to be more safety measures.
