Real artificial intelligence infrastructure could eventually move beyond data centers and into homes.
NVIDIA is advocating for a new strategy in which homes could host powerful AI computing hardware worth around $250,000 and homeowners would not have to pay for the equipment.
The idea is a small air-conditioner-sized computing unit that can be installed on the exterior wall of a house. The liquid cooling system, instead of fans, is designed to cope with the high heat of high-performing computing hardware.
Inside the box is an impressive amount of computing power. In this setup there are 16 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs with four server-grade CPUs and about 3TB of RAM. In reality, such hardware would usually be associated with professional data centers rather than residential properties.
NVIDIA, Span and homebuilder PulteGroup are the three involved in the project. Participating homeowners get the computing equipment without paying the upfront costs. They can use the spare electrical power available at the property to run the AI hardware and the companies can do so.
Homes can have a lot of electrical capacity that is not being utilized, the proposal says. The distributed computing model would harness that capacity instead of leaving it idle.

For homeowners, the arrangement could be that participating companies pay for the electricity and internet costs of running the equipment or a low flat rate arrangement.
The homeowner doesn’t get paid to host the system directly, but the benefit is to have the cost of household infrastructure covered.
The first deployment will likely be 100 newly built homes, which is a relatively small test compared to the ambitious long-term vision. By 2027, the long-term goal is to have 80,000 computing nodes and about a gigawatt of computing capacity.
If adopted, the model would transform AI computing infrastructure. Instead of massive centralized data centers, computing resources would be distributed across thousands of residential locations.
There are also important questions about such a system. Constant use of powerful GPUs would put enormous demand on electricity infrastructure and homeowners would need to consider installation requirements, noise, heat management, connectivity and maintenance issues.
Privacy and cybersecurity would surely be a huge concern in relation to the use of advanced computing equipment for residential use.
The idea shows how rapidly AI infrastructure is evolving. A home might well become more than just a place to live, but can serve as a small node in a much larger computing network.
At the moment, the project is just a small number of homes at the beginning of the project.
But if the technology is practical and economically feasible, the concept could offer a glimpse of the future in which AI computing is spread across everyday buildings and not concentrated in huge data centers.
