WhatsApp is currently testing a small but potentially useful change to the way iPhone users search for messages inside conversations. The Meta-owned messaging platform is working on a new in-chat search shortcut that could allow users to access the existing message-search feature more quickly while browsing older parts of a conversation.
It has been reported that the feature is already available in a WhatsApp beta build for iOS (as seen in TestFlight). As reported by WABetaInfo, this shortcut is present in WhatsApp beta for iOS version 26.31.10.70, but not yet for beta testers. So far there are no confirmed dates for when it will arrive for the wider public.
The proposed change is fairly simple. Rather than creating a new search engine or changing the search engine WhatsApp uses, it seems to be trying to make its existing search tool easier to find.
When WhatsApp is available, old messages will be found faster.
At present, if an iPhone user wishes to search for an older message in WhatsApp conversations, they will need to visit the chat information page before they can search for a certain message. This can be a real frustration when someone is already several months or years deep in a conversation and is trying to find a particular message.
The new shortcut is designed to reduce that navigation. As a user scrolls upward through a conversation and reaches older messages, a contextual search button could appear near the bottom of the screen. Tapping the button would reportedly take the user directly to the familiar in-chat search interface.
The shortcut would not stay permanently visible. It is contextual so that it could appear when it’s relevant and disappear when the user returns to the latest messages. This might help WhatsApp keep the conversation interface clear and fast so that Search is accessible when people need it.
For people that are used to long group chats, family chats, work talk, or personal message histories, this may be particularly convenient.
No major change to WhatsApp's search technology
The next feature doesn’t seem like a fundamental overhaul of WhatsApp’s search abilities. It is really only an interface improvement to reduce the steps needed to access an existing tool.
Users would still be able to search for messages in an individual conversation with WhatsApp's search feature. The difference would be how quickly they can reach that feature.
This can be particularly helpful when one is already in an older section of the conversation. Rather than leaving the conversation view and opening the chat details page, they could start a search directly from the screen they are already viewing.
WhatsApp has been improving search across iOS
The in-chat shortcut is part of a wider series of search-related changes WhatsApp has been exploring for iPhone users.
One such development is the search feature of WhatsApp Channels. It makes it easier to find older channel updates more readily accessible, as well as large amounts of published content to navigate, so people find it easier to look up.
WhatsApp has also been testing redesigned search filters and a recent searches section in the Chats tab. The changes are intended to guide users more quickly to conversations and groups that are relevant to them.
The new in-chat shortcut solves a slightly different problem. While general search improvements help users find conversations or content across WhatsApp, the proposed button is focused on finding information inside each chat.
Combined, this suggests that WhatsApp is gradually refining its search experience rather than going through one major redesign.
Why the small change could be important?
Searching for an old WhatsApp message can be surprisingly difficult in conversations that have accumulated thousands of messages. Users may remember a word, phrase, date, or piece of information but not exactly where it appeared.
In such situations, even a tiny reduction in navigation can make the process faster. The proposed shortcut would bring Search closer to users at the point they are most likely to need it: at the time when they’re actively scrolling through older messages.
This change could be especially useful in busy group chats: the information might get buried under a lot of new messages. Users would be able to quickly browse through the conversation or look up the answer and quickly go to the search button.
When will the feature be available?
For now, the new shortcut can’t be used immediately on iPhone. Although the feature has been discovered in a WhatsApp beta build, it hasn’t yet been enabled for test users.
WhatsApp often experiments with features internally or through beta releases before deciding whether and when to roll them out more broadly. Features discovered in beta versions can also be modified, delayed, or even abandoned before a public release.
WhatsApp has not announced an official launch date for the in-chat search shortcut. Until the feature is officially introduced, iPhone users will still be able to open the information screen of a conversation on the phone and select Search.
If WhatsApp eventually rolls out the shortcut for beta testers, and the feature is rolled out more widely, it could be a useful quality-of-life improvement for iPhone users who often look up lengthy conversations. The feature is small compared to big messaging updates, but its preference for less complicated activity will make WhatsApp much more usable.
