Puri is the Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas in the Modi government. His nomination for Madhya Pradesh will give him the chance to return to the Upper House of Parliament since he is currently serving in a Rajya Sabha seat from Uttar Pradesh.

The by-election has become necessary due to the resignation of BJP leader L. Murugan from the Rajya Sabha last month. The vacant seat is among the parliamentary positions represented by Madhya Pradesh, and polling is scheduled for November 12, 2026.

Why Puri's Nomination Matters

Puri’s political future became increasingly important after BJP announced eight candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh on October 5. But his name was not part of that list despite being a senior party leader and Union minister.

The development raised questions about how he would go ahead with his parliamentary career once his current term was up. His membership in Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh will end on November 25, 2026.

The latest announcement indicates that the BJP leadership has chosen Madhya Pradesh as the route to his possible return to the Upper House as well. But the outcome of the by-election will determine his next election to the seat in the next phase.

According to reports, the Madhya Pradesh BJP's state core committee had discussed a panel of potential candidates before forwarding names to the party's central leadership. The final decision to nominate Puri was subsequently announced by the party.

By Election Scheduled for November 12

The Rajya Sabha by-election will fill the vacancy created by Murugan's resignation. In this context, the polling schedule will make the coming weeks important for BJP as it prepares to secure representation for the vacant seat.

Rajya Sabha members are elected by elected members of the respective state legislative bodies, rather than directly by the general public. So the Madhya Pradesh assembly will therefore determine the outcome.

Puri's nomination also draws attention to the link between parliamentary membership and ministerial responsibilities. A minister who has not been in either House of Parliament for six consecutive months can no longer continue to be a minister after that period, under the Constitution.

The BJP’s announcement has settled the immediate question of its candidate for the Madhya Pradesh by-election. And the outcome will be the one which will determine whether Puri gets a new Rajya Sabha seat from the state.

The development is an important change from the uncertainty that followed his exclusion from the Uttar Pradesh candidate list. Now all eyes are on the November 12 polling and the final outcome of the election.
