Two deer were allegedly killed by poachers in Rajasthan’s Barmer district. Villagers and wildlife activists were angry over the incident reported on 7 November 2026 and staged a protest demanding arrest of those responsible immediately and stronger measures to protect wildlife in the region.
Villagers said one of the deer carcasses was hanging upside down from a tree after its legs were tied. The incident reportedly took place near Nehron Ki Nadi and Bisarniya villages in Dhanau police station area.
Two Deer Allegedly Killed by Suspected Poachers
It happened on Friday night, November 6 near Bisarniya village in Barmer district.
Villagers said poachers had allegedly shot two deer and tied the legs of one carcass before hanging it upside down from a tree.
The suspects were said to be on a hunt for third deer when they reached cattle enclosure of Kanwararam Choudhary.
Villagers said the suspects were using an iron container with stones in it to make sounds and draw deer towards them.
The noise “disturbed the cattle in the enclosure” and villagers nearby heard it, said one of them. When people shouted they fled “under cover of darkness”.
Villagers Begin Protest Demanding Arrests
The discovery of the dead deer caused anger amongst local residents and wildlife activists.
Villagers gathered near the incident site and started a sit-in protest demanding immediate arrest of the poachers.
They also called for stronger wildlife protection measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
Residents claimed that hunting incidents had happened in the area before too. They were unhappy that “nothing was done against those who do such things”.
The protesters demanded that the authorities take it seriously and those responsible should be prosecuted.
Police and Forest Department Begin Investigation
After being informed about the incident police officials from Forest Department and Dhanau police station reached there.
Chohtan Circle Officer Jetharam also reached the spot along with other officials.
The police began an investigation into the alleged hunting and started searching for the suspects.
Officials also tried to calm the protesters and address their grievances.
However villagers continued to demand strict action and better protection for wildlife in the surrounding areas.
Wildlife Protection Concerns in Rajasthan
The incident has once again brought illegal wildlife hunting in Rajasthan under the scanner.
Deer are among the wildlife species that need protection under India’s wildlife conservation laws. Hunting protected wild animals is punishable under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 (and other relevant provisions).
Local residents and wildlife activists have repeatedly called for stronger monitoring and cooperation between communities and forest officials.
The Barmer incident has also raised new questions about wildlife safety in rural areas (where human settlements and natural habitats are close to each other).
As the investigation continues, villagers hope authorities will find and arrest those responsible. The incident has also reignited calls for stronger action against illegal hunting and better protection of animals in the region.
