Not Just a Reel Hero, but a Real Hero: Actor Suriya’s Agaram Foundation Lights Up Thousands of Lives. Millions love his star-studded Kollywood performances; we see the muted, life-altering force behind the scenes.
He is a light for thousands of struggling and rural students with his Agaram Foundation, a living proof that true heroism is in the lives you change behind the screen too. What is Agaram Foundation? Agaram was founded in 2006 from Suriya’s belief that no talented student should be denied an education due to their circumstances.
The foundation primarily supports first-generation students in the disadvantaged communities of Tamil Nadu to make the first transition their families had to attain higher education. Vidhai Not Just The Way of the Scholarships Agaram - The Vidhai Project Not Just Scholarships Agaram’s flagship Vidhai project extends far beyond financial backing.
It provides mentoring, career advising, job training, skills development, psychological support and job training. By building up self-confidence and autonomy, students are educated not just in the subject but the construction of sustainable futures.
Impact in Numbers As of now, more than 8,000 students have benefited from Agaram and more than 6,700 by 2025 are first-generation graduates. Many of those students who previously grew up in impoverished familie are doctors, engineers and teachers transforming their communities and breaking poverty cycles.
Centering on marginalized communities The foundation caters to Dalit students, tribal youth, Sri Lankan refugees, and students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Agaram collaborates with the top educational institutions on providing free seats, accommodation and academic support for kids to be part of the world to have a fair chance of being accepted.
Suriya and Agaram are an inspiration and a story of inspiration not only at the movie theater, but also in the new, optimistic classrooms where he teaches. His work demonstrates that real courage is the strengthening of the most defenseless among us and the multiplier effect, the reverberation of the culture through the successive generations.
