The Tilak ceremony for Tilak (Auspicious Timing)
On the day of Tilak, Bhai Dooj is a highly significant religious occurrence. This is done in the Aparahna Kaal (afternoon time) and is the most auspicious to bring about longevity and success for a brother.

The Legend of Holi Bhai Dooj
Two big legends related to this day are:
- Yama & Yamuna: It is said that Lord Yama (the deity of Death) visited his sister, the River Yamuna, on this day. She presented him with a tilak and dinner with her. Yama was so touched by this that he decreed that any brother who received a tilak from his sister on this day would be saved from sudden death by Yama.
- Krishna and Subhadra: The legend holds that after the demon Narakasura was slain by the lord, he is said to have visited his sister Subhadra. She celebrated his victory with a protective tilak across his forehead.
Puja Vidhi - Ceremony Preparation:
Make a puja thali with sandalwood, vermilion (roli), unbroken rice (akshat), coconut, sweets (gujiya), and a ghee lamp (diya).
Seating: Have your brother sit on a wooden plank (patta) facing towards the North or North-East direction.
- The Tilak: Apply the tilak to brother's forehead. Place a few rice grains on the tilak and offer him coconut.
- Aarti: Perform aarti while praying for his health and happiness.
- Feast & Gifts: The sister feeds the brother sweets and a home-cooked meal. In return, the brother offers gifts or a token of thanks to his sister.
Note: Since the Lunar Eclipse took place on 3 March 2026, some families have moved directly from the colors of Holi to the religious quiet of Bhai Dooj. After the cleansing ritual after the eclipse, March 5 is the ideal day to bond with family anew.
