How “Time Pass” Shapes Teens and Why Reading Matters

These days, children and teenagers usually turn to ways of entertainment that are outside of the bounds of the schoolwork. Most of them are heavy time consumers on what is called “time pass” activities gaming, scrolling through social media or watching TV. Regular entertainment, while not harmful, excessive indulgence of time was particularly detrimental to teenagers aged 13 to 19 years on an unhealthy routine.

Video games, especially, are one popular means of “time pass” among teenagers. There's a bit of engaging education in some cases, but a lot of violence and addiction. Overuse of these games can result in physical issues such as eye strain, back pain and poor posture. It can influence mental health as well by stressful, frustrated or even aggressive activities in certain instances.

And teenagers who spend too much time online may not attend to most-important duties such as studies, playing outside and socializing which all play an important role in their overall development. Not in the same way but that entertainment need not harm.

Books present teenagers with a safe, useful alternative. Short stories, novels and other kinds of literature that are also entertaining stimulate the mind, can also have positive effects on reading development and can encourage vocabulary skills and creativity.

Reading enhances imagination, aids critical thinking and informs information about the world in an entertaining manner. Books, unlike video games, do not cause harmful changes to the body, it helps build a habit of life-long learning and self-improvement which can help a teenager develop a habit as a youth. It’s the responsibility of parents and teachers to encourage adolescents to spend their time in the right way.

Supporting activities such as read-alouds, group stories or educational games, can be fun, as can a tool for developing and learning. Teenagers themselves can also choose to have habits to moderate screen time with reading and other productive time.

The bottom line is even the most attractive but most dangerous type of activity such as video games are also time pass activities. Books and stories are a better alternative, mixing fun with learning. Teenagers who habitually read do not only have a lot more fun in their free time but they also lay the groundwork for a more healthy and happier future.

“Books and stories are a better way to spend free time. Reading not only entertains but also helps teenagers grow smarter and healthier.”
