Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0: A New Frontier in Rural Water Security

Water is the lifeblood, and access to clean drinking water is one of the greatest needs of each household. There were millions of rural households in India for decades that didn’t have tap water, often relying on wells or handpumps for water, or forcing a long trek to remote sites to get it. The JJM, launched in 2019, has been a game‑changer. This was to be supplemented or widened with an increase of ₹8.69 lakh crore under the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi under the Modi Union Cabinet to extend and reorganise the mission till 2028. It is a historic stride toward water and rural dignity.

Only 17% of rural households had tap water connections when JJM started in 2019. Over 81% of rural homes today use this facility. This feat has liberated millions of women from a daily obligation to fetch water; improved health outcomes due to a decrease in water‑borne diseases; and fortified rural livelihoods. The mission has taken on the status of a symbol of empowerment, dignity, and progress in villages across India.

The next stage of Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 isn’t only related to laying pipes and making infrastructure. It emphasizes sustainable service delivery, transparency, and community ownership. A goal is to ensure that Har Ghar Jal tap water in every home is available, and we work and continue for 24×7 rural drinking water supply. This vision is part of India’s wider aim of Viksit Bharat @2047, where the development is delivered to every dweller.
