Kamada Ekadashi 2026: Story, Rituals, and Significance

The vrat katha (story) of Kamada Ekadashi is mentioned in the Garuda Purana. It tells the tale of a celestial dancer Lalit and her husband Lalit Kumar of Ratnapura, who was cursed by a sage to become a demon by not performing his duties to the purpose of their living in Ratnapura. Deserved by her husband’s curse, Lalit prayed for the guidance from the sage Shringi. The sage advised herself to always recite the Kamada Ekadashi vrat in complete worship of Lord Vishnu in this life. Lalit followed the advice, and her husband was pulled free and returned to his origin by her faithful fasting and prayers that she was taking the curse off her husband and what he was in our world forever. This story underlines Kamada Ekadashi’s ability to eradicate even the highest level of sins and curses in a very short time and yet still to her heart to the very best of her ability for her husband.

For Kamada Ekadashi, the devotees wake up early, do a holy bath and devote their day to Lord Vishnu. Offerings of tulsi leaves, flowers, fruits, and incense are made. Many have been very careful in not consuming anything beyond fruits, milk, and water in a fast and are singing Vishnu Sahasranama and the mantra for that the following “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.” The fast is actually broken up at dwadashi (during the good parana time).

Kamada Ekadashi is believed to:

  • Remove curses and sins.
  • Fulfill desires and grant prosperity.
  • Purify the heart. Drive a person to be devoted.
  • Offer liberation from negative Karma.

It is considered the first Ekadashi after Chaitra Navratri and Rama Navami, so it is especially auspicious.

Kamada Ekadashi is not strictly a festival but a way of life in which commitment and discipline and purity are important to the individual. It is because the vrat katha is true faith and fasting is attainable for even the supreme obstacles in life and it is just the spiritual practice itself which is so special to a temple. This Ekadashi brings peace and prosperity and God’s blessing; this is why the people of Shiva worship the Ekadashi more.
