Bengaluru residents have finally received a degree of comfort after days of hot and dry weather. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rain in the town between now and May 29.
Bengaluru should expect only light-to-moderate rain, with thunderstorms and lightning around the week, as per last Sunday's weather bulletin. Cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal was bringing a major shift in Bengaluru's weather. The weather has facilitated very good conditions for continuous and extensive rainfall throughout Bengaluru and its sub-districts, IMD officials stated.
Another key factor for the ongoing weather changes was a north-south trough extending from southern Bihar through Jharkhand and Odisha into the north coastal zone of Andhra Pradesh, meteorologists said. Combined, the storms are expected to induce heightened cloud activity, stronger winds and thunderous rainfall throughout large areas of the state.
On Monday, Bengaluru is set for cloudy skies over the afternoon hour and evening, and some parts of the city have moderate rains, the forecast said. Wind gusts of 40-50 km per hour can also occur in smaller areas, particularly when the heat from intensive thunderstorms is present.
The IMD projects the max for the city temperatures is set to sit around 32 degrees Celsius, and the minimum is close to 22 degrees Celsius. Residents now have a great sense of relief from the scorching temperatures they saw last week. The week has also seen the weather department issuing a yellow alert for Bengaluru in anticipation of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.
In heavy rain, people should be careful and not take cover under trees or weaker buildings when there is thunderstormy, the police said. This cooling is not exclusive to the region of Bengaluru. In recent days, several places in Karnataka have experienced a sudden drop in temperatures.
Weather officials reported temperatures fell 2 to 5 degrees Celsius in parts of the state. Days, months before that, areas had daytime temperatures ranging in the 34 degrees Celsius range, but now show 30 degrees Celsius below due to continued cloudiness and rainfall activities.
The climate shift had led to a significant relief from the recent heatwave-like conditions happening across the state. The IMD additionally broadened the Yellow Alert to several districts of North Interior Karnataka, Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka until 29th May.
During that forecasting period, these regions are expected to experience moderate to heavy rains along with thunderstorm occurrences. The precipitation itself, experts say, is good for groundwater recharge, providing some temporary relief from water scarcity in some urban and rural areas where the situation remains as it is now.
In Bengaluru, though, civic authorities are watching out for low-elevation places or traffic zones, so that water does not get stuck in some of them, or they’re not interrupted by sudden heavy rainfall. Bengaluru residents can brace themselves for cooler, friendlier weather again following a long spell of sunshine and fire throughout the week, because rain clouds are expected to rule much of the skies for the rest of the week.
