Kannada actress Karunya Ram made a rare appearance at the Central Crime Branch (CCB) headquarters in Bengaluru today due to a long legal fight involving fraud and relentless cyberbullying. Reporting from the inquiry, the actress went before the media to clear the air on whether she got involved and the specifics of her complaints.
And the court’s recent discovery prompted a major turn for the worse: the CCB called the actress and the accused into a face-to-face meeting, an event that had gained momentum on social media and in which links were made to the actress’s sister.
Targeting Trolls, Not The Innocent
Karunya Ram was quick to clarify the extent of her legal action. She noted that her complaint aimed directly at people who had violated decency. "I only have a complaint against five unknown individuals. These were the people who were making menacing phone calls and making derogatory, abusive comments on social media,” Karunya said. Her legal action was a response to personal harassment not a blanket allegation against others complicit in a wider controversy, she clarified.
The CCB Inquiry and Apologies
In-person, the CCB officers had a facilitated conversation between the actress and the accused with those involved. The perpetrators confessed to having acted inappropriately during the inquiry, Karunya said. "Today the CCB questioned both me and the accused. In my presence, they explained that they had no authority or rights to talk out of turn and acted on the spur of the moment.
They acknowledged wrongdoing and have sent a written apology," she said. Humans are not immune to making mistakes, but the willingness to remedy those mistakes and comply with the law is what makes a difference, the actress said. She welcomed the legal process which made the accused aware of the repercussions of cyber harassment.
Keep in Balance With Protocol and Dignity
Karunya kept a tight lid on the finer details, citing legal protocols, despite the case being high-profile. “You have some protocols that bind you. I cannot speak to you about every detail of the case in public at this point,” she said. Reacting to gossip and rumors involving her family, as well as speculation about a scheme involving their sister, the actress was dignified. She replied that she has never let baseless rumours get in the way of her career. “I have done nothing wrong. I don't feel the need to give an explanation to everyone. I take the legal path, and I work with the law and the authorities to assure me justice."
A Message of Gratitude
Karunya Ram thanked CCB and police for cooperating with and acting quickly on the incident to identify the individuals responsible for the vitriolic comments, she said in a statement. In ending her engagement with a firm “Satyameve Jayate” (Truth alone triumphs), the actress sent a signal of faith in the judicial system. While CCB will still find out how the financials fit into the context of a financial scandal, Karunya Ram wants to focus more on her digital future, recovering her space from toxic harassment.
