Durable success of films of Dhurandhar 2 at the cinema box office not only has helped build the movie industry it is also popularised but it has also generated peculiar allegations and even viral content to share with social media. In the film the story features Ranveer Singh playing Jaskirat Singh Rangi, an Indian undercover agent, in Pakistan with the alias Hamza Ali. This picture paints him emerging from enemy ranks and finally exposing and cracking terrorist networks from within of the terrorists. On screen those narrative touches a chord, but in real life it has been seen to become a big lie.

A video now going viral claims Pakistan has begun a search operation for Indian spies following the film. The clip showing those sleeping on roadsides with blankets pulled out of place and the people interviewed being stopped by security is indicative of this. A lot of people on social media call it the ‘Dhurandhar 2 effect’– that is to say the film has led to increased security patrols as a result of it (Pakistan has also launched a search operation for the movie).

But fact checks find a truly different reality. The video is not recent (and isn't related to the film). There is some speculation the footage comes from an earlier period of police operations in Karachi and is being seen mainly in Lyari -a neighbourhood known as one of the centers of security crackdown activities. And other video such clips circulated since about mid-2025, well before Dhurandhar 2 was released?

As an example this shows how quickly misinformation can spread, especially when a popular film falls in-line with geopolitical narratives. If you believe what the video’s revival is about then it is true that they really did happen within the movie itself. But in reality it’s a whole clip from the past recycled from one storyline into another.

Dhurandhar 2 has not been officially released in Pakistan, but pirated versions of the film have already been made widely in the country. Perhaps this underground viewership is responsible for the torrentian activity associated to the movie and speculation around real world events around the film as well as some fictional and unsubstantiated incidents on the surface of the screen.

People worry that misinformation could give a false impression of reality and be a powerful factor in causing tension. So while movies are always rooted in reality the line between fiction and reality should be drawn immediately.

Dhurandhar 2 continues its fantastic box office success, it is a commercial hit and also a cultural moment. That’s the viral video that reminds me in a time when it seems digital content are just so easily out-of-whats-source from the source.
