'Dhurandhar' Shakes Indian Cinema: Ranveer Singh-Starrer Becomes Highest-Grossing Single-Language Film

India’s cinema has another film emperor at the box office. Aditya Dhar's spy pic 'Dhurandhar' became history's most popular film in a single language, becoming the top grossing Indian film ever. Breaking the record, set by the Hindi version of Allu Arjun's Pushpa 2: The Rule, the Ranveer Singh-star took to a record-breaking ₹831.40 crore on that day's 33rd box office gross.

That extraordinary run has been praised globally, particularly by industry titans. The last moment that stands out is Yash Raj Films (YRF) who wrote an unusual "alma mater" for Ranveer Singh releasing their statement: "It's a major Indian movie, one that will never be forgotten… breaking records and taking Indian cinema that much further from the box office."

Dhurandhar, a recent release from India, has kept the ticket window over here on the record-breaking occasions for the past five weeks and that is because at the same time, Dhurandhar has broken new heights for it being the only non-multilingual movie to have ever crossed ₹1,000 crore world-wide (outside China). Box Office Hurdles (as at Day 33):

  • India Net Collection: ₹831.40 crore.
  • Worldwide Gross Collection: ₹1,253.83 crore
  • Profit Margin: approximated ₹600 Crore (budget ₹225–250 crore).
  • Scoring: The 4th highest-grossing Indian domestic film of all time, overtaking RRR.
  • Cast and Vision: A fictional thriller written by Aditya Dhar, the brainchild of Uri: The Surgical Strike and his films in recent years, Dhurandhar was based on true stories involving clandestine activities and Karachi's illegal gang warfare.

The movie stars the following powerhouse cast:

  • Hamza Ali Mazari, an Indian operative infiltrating terror networks, is portrayed by Ranveer Singh in what could be considered a career-transforming role.
  • Akshaye Khanna plays the infamous criminal Rehman Dakait.
  • Sanjay Dutt features as the uncompromising SP Chaudhary Aslam.
  • Ajay Sanyal, a character loosely modelled on NSA Ajit Doval, is played by R. Madhavan.
  • And Arjun Rampal is the bad guy, Major Iqbal.
  • Aditya Dhar has been lauded by YRF for his "clarity in terms of vision and fearlessness,"

The Indian National Theatre also points out that Aditya has led Indian entertainment on a new route.

What’s Comes Next in the Line Up?
