Drishyam 3 Box Office Collection Day 6: Mohanlal’s Thriller Crosses Rs 170 Crore Worldwide

Drishyam 3 (with Malayalam megastar Mohanlal) is also a box-office hit, but that is part of what sets it apart as not just one of the best-selling films in Indian history, but also a best-selling thriller series.

Or, despite being in theatres for the sixth day, if both theatres won’t give the film a go-ahead for home and foreign alike, it is one that actually has an opening to win at the box office.

Millions of fans have been tuning in for the long-anticipated third instalment in these genre classics. It not only gave us a great plotline structure but also quite an engaging characterisation of Georgekutty, the Indian Movie archetype, probably in abundance. That movie racked up a jaw-dropping Rs 6.45 crore in India for the sixth day of the six-day weekend on Tuesday, May 26, according to last week’s box office report.

Net earnings remained good, especially on weekdays, and in the evening, when sales tend to be low, word of mouth is good, so interest in watching the movie is relatively high. But when it came to the film, it was shown 4,668 times on Tuesday in India, and the overall number of shows only revealed how popular it was at the box office.

For 6 days, India's net collection for films had reached an impressive Rs 68.60 crore. It was reported to have reached Rs 79.62 crore gross collection in India thus far. According to trade analysts, the massive amount of Thriller writing powered by Mohanlal’s dominant role is responsible for bringing huge crowds onto cinemas’ biggest stages.

Despite all of Drishyam 3's box office success, however, the big surprise is its big hit overseas run. But it is really a mega massive international phenomenon and a critical success internationally, especially for Malay Film fans around the world. On its sixth day abroad, the film reportedly grossed Rs 6 crore or more.

Its gross collection around the world at the moment is Rs 90.70 crore, not even half what it does nationally. That the Drishyam series is global; that there are lots of fans in other countries are all the signs for that. Drishyam 3 has surely earned the world around Rs 170 crore, domestically and locally.

Now, in only six days, it will have an aggregate gross of ~Rs 170.32 crore in global gross collection each day. The film could be in the Rs 200 crore collection club, so long as it stays the course, at least to box office pundits. Just the strong weekday occupancy alone indicates that the film has a few loyal and consistently active viewers and has their interest constantly.

And what’s so good about both the movie and why it’s so strong is that all that suspense in there is all about Georgekutty and how he outwitted the police trying to save his family. Because at least that’s why the perpetual guessing about where this character’s going is so great, a discussion that not only exists in the fan base, but extends to the thriller fan, as much as the suspense fan.

The Drishyam has received much praise for its storytelling intelligence as well as the deep emotion and captivating suspense it packs in decades. While Drishyam 3 remains on course to break several box office records in the future, and establish its place as one of the prime seats for Malayalam cinema and never again before once in a while it will thus bring home a new record for box office ever thereafter.

And with the tourists streaming Mohanlal's third film and many others every Friday, I can only conclude that this is the finest Malayalam film in history with respect to highest grossing.
