Karuppu, featuring Suriya and Trisha Krishnan, is now in theatres, and fans and moviegoers are posting rave reviews on social media. The action-fantasy drama from RJ Balaji got much buzz before anyone saw the film, thanks to a frenetic trailer, a rural backdrop, and Suriya and Trisha’s reunion after nearly two decades, but the movie was not to be watched.
The actor was embraced by hardcore Suriya fans who praised his screen presence, action sequences and performances in emotional sequences, though numerous film critics and audience members appeared to be divided over the screenplay and the adaptation of the film.
Initial comments on X suggest the movie offers lots of high-octane 'mass moments' and highly visual action scenes, though that isn't to say generalisations about the story as a whole. Some users said Suriya's role was the movie's biggest strength.
Its bombastic courtroom scenes, punchy lines and fast transformations on stage and on the nerves of audience members are what netizens like most about him.
Trisha Krishnan's lawyer, Preethi, has also been especially well-received by some reviewers. Some filmmakers loved that Trisha did when she emerged along with Suriya for one of the most exciting scenes in the film. X subscribers think Sai Abhyankkar's background score and fantasy-action framing of the film are good.

Are we a joke 🥹
I literally thought I will witness the film first but fate….
But guys, the setup was damn good. The first 40 mins will entertain well.#Karuppu #KaruppuReview
Some of the visuals appear to resonate with some viewers, thanks in part to its backdrop of rural scenes, references to the village deity Karuppusamy, and other emotional elements as it seems in the film. Several fans lauded the cinematography and action choreography, calling scenes “goosebumps-worthy.”
Critics called it “a little tacky.” The critics said they were not always in the mood for rosy feelings. Some say the screenplay isn’t rendering it all so consistently, and it’s too loud; some say a few fantasy themes haven’t given their viewers a sense of depth they may have wished for.
#karuppu Review - Movie solely depends on one linersNo story, no logic, just headache from start to end. Avg. 1st half. Mokka 2nd half. Torture Climax. Zero Emotional Connect. Disappointed !#KaruppuDisaster pic.twitter.com/eIIvGxbLyg

Though the lead actors had done very well, some netizens regarded the movie as a huge disaster, lamenting the pacing and the lopsided plot. Opening day featured surprise drops, and the morning performances in Tamil Nadu were said to have been cancelled due to financial constraints and distribution woes early in the morning.
Fans purchased first-day first-show tickets and said the sudden disturbance had disappointed them. Suriya is said to have intervened at a high level to solve the crisis, and the screenings proceeded more smoothly after that. A few critics have had their moment of reckoning with the paltry notes of “Karuppu,” sure, but it is one of the hottest Tamil releases of the year.

And industry audiences believe the weekend’s box office success relies on word of mouth chatter about it from family viewers and Suriya’s passionate fanbase. Movies that juxtapose action, courtroom drama, fantasy and social commentary, the film is an exercise like nothing else on a Tamil commercial story circuit.
Whether “Karuppu” turns out to be a lot of money and a daring venture to experiment or at least a kind of controversial play of sorts, it still creates some online chatter.
