Delhi Police Arrest Content Creator Amir Shokeen Over Viral Video Targeting Tripura Youth

The Delhi Police have arrested digital content creator Amir Shokeen, also known as Muhammad Amir, for allegedly uploading a viral social media video that depicted racial abuse and humiliation directed at a young man from Tripura. The incident has drawn widespread criticism, with political leaders and members of the public calling for action against online harassment and racial discrimination targeting people from Northeast India.

The video spread across social media, and Shokeen allegedly made derogatory remarks about the young man’s appearance and background. Reports also mentioned a comment where he compared the youth to China's president and comments mocking Tripura. The footage has received criticism for the use of racial stereotypes and the treatment of people from the Northeast in online content.

The arrest followed police action in Delhi after the video came to public attention. According to reports, Sadar Bazar police station was where the Delhi case was registered, as Shokeen was caught in the Karol Bagh area. The distinction is important as the two locations have been linked to different stages of the police operation.

Police Register Cases in Delhi and Tripura

The Delhi FIR reportedly invokes Sections 192, 196, 352, and 353 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). These provisions cover provocation with the intention to cause a riot, promoting enmity between groups, intentional insult intended to provoke a breach of peace, and statements conducing to public mischief.

Tripura Police have also registered a separate case in connection with the incident. In the Tripura case, there are provisions under the BNS, the Information Technology Act, and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The specific provisions reported in connection with the Tripura case should be distinguished from those listed in the Delhi FIR.

The investigation has consequently involved cooperation between the police in Delhi and Tripura. Reports said a Tripura Police team traveled to Delhi in connection with the case and sought transit remand to transport Shokeen to Tripura for further legal proceedings. The transfer should not be treated as complete until confirmed by a subsequent official statement or reliable report.

Political Leaders Condemn the Video

The incident also drew criticism from political leaders. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju spoke out against the alleged treatment of the Tripura youth and called for legal action. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha also called for action in connection with the incident.

The response has intensified the debate on racial discrimination experienced by people from Northeast India in other parts of the country. Such incidents can become particularly contentious when videos circulate online, potentially exposing individuals to further ridicule while amplifying derogatory stereotypes before a wide audience.

Public criticism and political statements are distinct from the findings of a criminal investigation. The allegations against Shokeen need to be evaluated through the legal process, and claims about the incident should come from police statements or verified reporting.

Creator Issues Apology, Claims Video Was Scripted

Following the controversy, Shokeen issued a public apology via his social media channels. He claimed that the video was scripted to depict the encounter and that he had not intended to hurt the sentiments of people from Northeast India.

This is the creator’s stated position, but it does not independently establish the circumstances in which the video was recorded. The police investigation will be responsible for examining the available evidence and determining the relevant facts.

Reports have also referred to previous cases registered against Shokeen, including allegations involving physical altercations and molestation. Such claims should be understood as reported police history rather than proof of guilt or convictions in each case.
