Bath, 33, is wanted in nearly 20 criminal cases in Punjab, including murder, attempted murder, extortion and other serious crimes. His arrest is, indeed, a significant step in the state police’s search for alleged criminal networks from abroad.

Punjab Police Begins Documentation Process

According to a report published by The Tribune on October 26, Tarn Taran Senior Superintendent of Police Surendra Lamba confirmed Bath’s detention in Canada.

The police are working with central agencies to get the documentation for bringing him back to India. Canadian authorities had handed him over to federal law enforcement agencies for further proceedings, reports said.

But this is not yet the same as a full extradition. The legal and administrative requirements have to be fulfilled before his return to India is possible. No publicly verified information indicates that a final extradition order has been issued.

Who is Amritpal Singh Bath?

Amritpal Singh Bath (also known as Harpreet Singh) lives in Mianpur village in Punjab's Tarn Taran district. Punjab Police has described him as a Category A gangster and he is wanted in many criminal cases.

The investigators have said Bath fled India with a forged passport to avoid arrest. He has also been linked to extortion, drug trafficking and violent crime.

And he is entitled to due process under the law.

Alleged role in Village Sarpanch Murders

One of the cases related to Bath is the murder of Avan Kumar, also known as Sonu Cheema, a village sarpanch in Punjab in January 2024. Investigators have alleged that Bath was behind the conspiracy behind the killing.

He was also linked by police to the killing of another village sarpanch. These are part of a wider investigation into the state’s criminal networks and violence in the state.

Police also have questioned his links to organised criminal groups operating across borders. These claims are to be established by the investigation and judicial proceedings.

Why His Detention Matters

Punjab has been pursuing alleged gangsters who are suspected of steering crime from abroad. Tracking them down often involves coordination between state police, central agencies and foreign law enforcement agencies.

Bath’s reported detention could help investigators advance cases pending against him in Punjab. However, his detention does not automatically mean that he will be transferred to India immediately.

The next step will be legal and any formal decision by relevant Canadian authorities.

Punjab Police has started the documentation process to bring Amritpal Singh Bath back to India. It is still a big deal for the state that wanted suspects are abroad.
