Jamia Millia Islamia has agreed to hold Students’ Union elections by the last week of August 2027, ending weeks of student protests and hunger strikes demanding restoration of an elected student body. It is a landmark decision for student representation as Jamia hasn’t held student union elections since 2006.
The announcement followed talks between university officials and protesting students. The administration has written a commitment that deadlines for completing the constitution of the students’ union and elections will be given. Students withdrew their hunger strike after assurance.
In a university press release issued on Thursday, the university said: “Drafting, approval and implementation of Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union constitution by May 15, 2027 is imperative so that the framework for long-awaited elections is in place”.
Jamia Announces Timeline for Student Union Elections
The university’s proposed schedule states that student union elections would take place within six weeks after the start of the next academic session (i.e., July 16, 2027). The new academic year starts on July 16, 2027.
So by this timeline, the elections should be held by the last week of August 2027. The written assurance gives students a specific time frame for restoring an elected student representative body.
The absence of student union elections for nearly two decades was a major issue for students — Jamia last held elections in 2006, and protesters had been demanding that the administration announce a clear election schedule for months.
The university administration had tried before to convince students that verbal assurances weren’t enough — they wanted a written commitment (not just promises). The latest letter seems to have met this key demand.
Students Withdraw Hunger Strike After University Assurance
The hunger strike was called off after a meeting between the Registrar and protesting students. University officials told them that the constitution would be completed within the deadline given by them and elections would take place on the schedule announced earlier.
The agitation had intensified in the last few weeks as students staged demonstrations and hunger strikes near the administrative block of the university.
The protests also led to increased security around campus gates as tensions between administration and demonstrators disrupted the normal running of the university.
Students had argued that restoring an elected union was necessary to ensure democratic representation and give them a formal platform from which academic, administrative and campus issues could be raised.
Now that the administration has written a timeline, protesters have agreed to suspend their agitation.
Jamia to Withdraw Disciplinary Action Against Protesters
Another important development in the agreement is disciplinary measures taken against students who took part in the demonstrations.
The university’s communication says that show-cause notices and disciplinary proceedings related to agitation will be cancelled. Rustication orders, suspensions and campus ban orders relating to the protests will also be revoked.
The withdrawal of these measures was one of the major demands students put forward during negotiations with university officials.
Students had said disciplinary action against protesters should be revisited as part of efforts to resolve the dispute and return normalcy to campus.
The withdrawal is meant to reduce tensions between the administration and student community and allow students to return to their academic activities without uncertainty about the disciplinary proceedings.
#WATCH | Delhi: Students celebrate at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University as JMI setS May 15, 2027, as the deadline for completing the approval and implementation of its students’ union constitution, with elections to be held within six weeks of the commencement of the next academic session. The fresh order comes amid continued protests and a hunger strike by students demanding the restoration of the elected students’ union, which has remained defunct since 2006.

Offline Classes and Examinations to Resume on Monday
Along with the resolution of the protest, Jamia Millia Islamia is gearing up to resume regular academic activities. Offline classes and examinations will start on Monday after the university shifted teaching activities online due to campus tensions.
This is especially true for students taking courses where practical sessions are held, laboratory work is done, field activities are carried out, and face-to-face academic interaction is required.
Online learning kept academic continuity going during the disruption, but students had expressed concerns about remote teaching (especially programmes where training is hands-on).
The return to offline classes should give the academic environment more stability.
What Happens Next?
Students have ended their hunger strike, and the university has announced a formal election schedule, so now we have to work on implementing the agreement.
The administration has to draft, approve and implement the students’ union constitution by May 15, 2027; the university will have to organise the electoral process within six weeks of the academic session starting on July 16.
If the announced schedule is followed, Jamia could have its first student union elections in more than 20 years by August 2027.
For now at least, the agreement is an important step towards ending the campus standoff, getting back to normal academic activity and re-establishing an elected platform for student representation.
