A tragic late-night shooting at an apartment complex in Amarillo, Texas, has left two teenagers dead and at least 10 others injured, according to local authorities. The incident occurred during a party attended by juveniles and young adults in the early hours of Saturday, May 2.
Police said officers responded to reports of gunfire around 2 a.m. at an apartment complex located on South Coulter Street. Investigators revealed that the gathering had originally started at another location before moving to the apartment complex. Preliminary findings suggest that several individuals were asked to leave the first party and later followed attendees to the new location.
According to the Amarillo Police Department, the suspects allegedly attempted to enter an apartment before opening fire with what authorities described as a “rifle-style weapon.” Witnesses nearby reported hearing dozens of gunshots, with some comparing the sound to “machine gun fire.”
Officials confirmed that 17-year-old Ezekiel Rudy Almazan and an unidentified 16-year-old boy were killed in the attack. Ten other victims sustained injuries, including multiple gunshot wounds, and several were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
Police recovered a Glock 9mm handgun near the scene, but investigators believe multiple firearms may have been used based on shell casings found in the area. Authorities have not made any arrests so far, though they believe at least two suspects were involved in the shooting.
Amarillo Police Chief Thomas Hover stated that investigators believe the suspects had some connection to the targeted location and may have been known to one of the partygoers. Authorities are continuing to review surveillance footage and are urging anyone with information or videos from the scene to come forward.
The shooting has once again raised concerns about rising gun violence in Texas, particularly involving gatherings attended by teenagers and young adults. The investigation remains ongoing.
