Andhra Scientist Vimala Bathineni Wins Rs 3.6 Crore Denmark PhD Fellowship After Years of Rejections

For years, the Andhra Pradesh scientist Vimala Bathineni faced repeated rejection when she was applying for PhD programmes. But she continued refining her applications for research and she continued to improve her ideas and try again.

And that persistence has now resulted in a major breakthrough.

Bathineni has received Denmark's prestigious DARA PhD Fellowship valued at around 2.5 million Danish kroner or 3.6 crore. She will start a three-year PhD programme at the University of Southern Denmark in September 2026.

Years of rejections before the Breakthrough

With the news shared on LinkedIn, Bathineni said the fellowship was the result of years of persistence, uncertainty and continued effort.

She spoke about having received several PhD rejections and had also been unsuccessful in her first DARA Fellowship attempt.

However, instead of allowing those setbacks to end her academic journey, she used each rejection as an opportunity to learn and improve.

Bathineni said the repeated setbacks had at times made her question herself, but every rejection also taught her something valuable.

She is an example of an often ignored aspect of academic careers: highly qualified researchers have to go years without being contacted for a good job or a big chance.

From Andhra Pradesh to Denmark

Bathineni previously worked as a scientist in the Horticulture Research Station in Rekulakunta, Andhra Pradesh, from 2019 to 2023.

She later moved to Denmark after her husband took a job there. It was moving away from a stable professional career in India but it also opened the door to a new phase of research.

Her forthcoming doctoral project, FABA LOOP, will focus on faba beans as an alternative source of protein in Denmark.

The research will assess whether it is possible for the country to reduce its dependency on imported soy protein by increasing the cultivation of protein-rich faba beans in real farming and climate conditions.

Research Could Support Sustainable Agriculture

This project has implications beyond academic research. Bathineni's work for faba beans cultivation and use would also be supportive of Denmark’s goal in expanding domestic protein production.

We also think this research is in line with the overall world effort on more sustainable food systems and climate-friendly agriculture.

Faba beans are protein-rich crops and may have a bigger bearing on reducing reliance on imported protein.

For Bathineni, the project marks the continuation of a research direction she has been working towards for nearly a decade.

She said the fellowship is a natural continuation of her work and would help her to research ideas she has long wanted to explore.

The fellowship marks a big turning point in Bathineni’s academic life. After years of applications, rejections and uncertainty she will now embark on doctoral research at one of Denmark’s top universities.
