A passenger at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka was left devastated after finding his belongings - including gold jewellery - missing from checked luggage.
The passenger also noticed signs of tampering after getting the suitcase from the arrival baggage carousel. The luggage appeared to have been opened, and the traveler examined it before leaving the airport, she said.
The incident has reignited concerns about the security of passengers’ checked baggage, particularly during the period between luggage being removed from an aircraft and reaching the airport’s arrival carousel.
Suitcase Reportedly Tampered
According to the information available, the passenger had placed personal belongings in the suitcase before checking it in at the departure airport. When they arrived in Dhaka, the traveler found the luggage in a condition that indicated it had been opened.
When checking the suitcase, the passenger found that gold ornaments and other valuables were missing. Cash and electronic items were also among the belongings that weren’t found, they said.
Then the passenger notified airport authorities and filed a complaint so that the missing items could be investigated.
At this point, the reported loss should be treated as an allegation until an official investigation takes place.
Man arrived from abroad with gold and ornaments for family. All stolen from the terminal at airport Dhaka, Bangladesh. Frequent incident here; man burst out, broke down in tears. Incident under scores the contrast between anti-smuggling operations and claims of unchecked theft from legitimate luggage.😳

The Baggage Handling Process Continues to Be Under Scrutiny
Missing items from checked baggage can raise questions about security at different stages of the baggage handling process. After being handed over at check-in, luggage passes through a number of stages such as aircraft loading and unloading, transportation between the aircraft and terminal, sorting and delivery to the baggage carousel.
Any unauthorized access during this process can compromise passengers’ belongings.
Airports typically use surveillance systems, restricted areas, and staff monitoring to mitigate such risks. But investigations are required to determine exactly where and when an alleged theft happened.
Authorities Will Examine CCTV and Handling Records
After a complaint of this nature, investigators can check available CCTV footage, baggage-handling records, and staff access logs to establish the movement of the suitcase.
Security personnel may also look for the passenger’s details about the missing items, the condition of the luggage when it was collected, and any identifying features that may be useful to the investigation.
That case is a reminder for international travelers: valuable jewellery, cash, and other high-value items should generally not be placed in checked baggage when airline and airport rules permit safer alternatives.
When it is clear that luggage has been disturbed, passengers should report it immediately to airport authorities and other relevant carriers.
That incident at Dhaka airport shows that strong baggage-screening, surveillance, and complaint-resolution systems are needed to maintain passenger confidence.
