Football history will be made in the history books for the football world as FIFA announced that the 2026 World Cup winners would win championship rings as well as the World Cup trophy and gold medals. Inspired in part by the NBA and NFL's tradition of championship rings in American sports, FIFA has made its first such honor in World Cup history.
This gives even more prestige to what is surely the final for the defending champions, Argentina and Spain, scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
FIFA Introduces Championship Rings
According to FIFA, a total of 2,026 championship rings will be produced to commemorate the tournament.
Only 30 specially crafted rings will be reserved exclusively for the World Cup-winning team. These rings will be unique and individually customized and given to the players and coaching staff after the tournament.
The remaining 1,996 rings will be made available worldwide as officially licensed collectibles for football fans. Each ring will carry a unique serial number and an official certificate of authenticity.
Each ring has been carefully designed to represent the greatest achievement in world football. One side will have the FIFA World Cup Trophy, and the other side the identity and emblem of the champion nation.
A Unique Honor for Champions
FIFA confirmed that the winning team’s captain and head coach will be the first to receive the championship rings during the post-final celebrations.
The other customized rings will be presented to the victorious squad later.
The introduction of championship rings is in line with FIFA’s vision to combine world football tradition with North American sporting culture, as the 2026 tournament will be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Donald Trump Expected to Present Trophy
As a bonus, President Donald Trump will attend the World Cup final and give the FIFA World Cup Trophy to the winning captain at the closing ceremony of the final.
Trump also plans to attend a FIFA reception at Trump Tower in New York City in advance of the final.
The White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt says that the tournament was one of the most successful sporting events hosted by the United States, with worldwide viewership, security arrangements, and organizational success.
Argentina vs Spain: A Dream Final
The final brings together two football powerhouses.
Argentina, the defending world champions, were awarded their place in the final after their 2-1 comeback victory over England in the semifinals. Enzo Fernández scored early to equalize before Lautaro Martínez scored the winner to give Argentina another World Cup final.
Spain, meanwhile, went to the World Cup final for the first time since lifting the trophy in 2010. They won 2-0 against France and gave a good performance to take part in the biggest game of football.
With Argentina looking for another world title and Spain attempting to regain football’s biggest prize after sixteen years, fans can expect a high-intensity clash featuring some of the world’s best footballers.
History Awaits
Whether Argentina can defend its crown or Spain wins the title again, the 2026 FIFA World Cup final will go down as a seminal moment in history.
In addition to the game itself, FIFA's first-ever championship rings ensure that the winners will now come away with the world's most coveted trophy and also a special symbol of their success - one that comes from the best of the world's sports traditions.
