Guidance from Surah Al‑Baqarah for First Friday of Ramadan 2026 in the UAE

It was no different on this Friday as both the UAE and beyond took in a powerful message from Surah Al‑Baqarah, while mosques observed prayers in this time frame. The sermon highlighted the reason for fasting, read from the Qur’an, and compassion and generosity as hallowed values throughout the holy month.

Central Message of the Khutbah

At the center of the khutbah was the phrase: “O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you as it is prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain Taqwa” (2:183). Imams spoke of fasting as not just not eating or drinking, but as an act that would lead to Taqwa (a better realization of one’s relationship with Allah). This means, in fact, guarding the things that you speak, controlling the rage, trying not to hurt anyone, and being sincere in your actions in real work in the face of danger.

Ramadan and the Qur’an

The sermon further pointed out that Ramadan was the month when the revelations of the Qur’an were made known, citing verse 2:185 as part of the month of the year. In fact, all worshippers are encouraged to read and ponder the Qur’an every day so that this passage becomes an anchor of guidance and will in their everyday life. Families were encouraged to foster a Qur’anic ambiance at home, with particular reference to kids – to make sure that faith was nurtured at home through understanding and practice, and the family had a Qur’an atmosphere when they learned and took part in the activity.

Ease and Compassion in Islam

Another of the messages was the Qur’anic assurance that “Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship” (2:185). He said Islam teaches balance and kindness, making allowances for the ill, the aged and those who are in transit.

Charity and Community Solidarity

And the first Friday sermon emphasized charity and community solidarity. The actions of taking care to sustain the fasting, to deliver Zakat and Sadaqah, strengthening of family were to be taught to be part of Ramadan.

And when it does happen, the message is plain as day: It is a time of transformation – time to refresh faith, to hone character and to draw closer to Allah through discipline, reflection and love.
