A 17-year-old Indian-born teenager from Acton, Mass., has been charged with killing his mother and younger brother in his family home in Acton, Massachusetts, after an overnight search that led to his arrest early Wednesday.
Arjun Aravind, a student at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School, faces two murder charges in the deaths of his mother, 45-year-old Sudha Venkatesan, and his 14-year-old brother Siddharth Aravind.
Aravind also faces two counts each of assault and battery on a household or family member and assault and battery. He’s also charged with unauthorized use and theft of a motor vehicle, authorities said.
The case is also gaining particular attention because investigators said Aravind had exhibited worrying behavior before the deaths, including using the internet and ChatGPT to explore theoretical ideas or fantasies about the killing of his family.
Mother, Brother Were Found Dead At Family Home
The deaths were found Tuesday evening after a tutor arrived at the family’s Martha Lane residence shortly after 6:30 pm for a scheduled appointment. The tutor was unable to get into the home or contact anyone inside, he told investigators.
The tutor then contacted Arjun’s father, who also could not reach his wife or children. He then asked Acton police to conduct a welfare check at the property.
Arjun’s father had seen his wife earlier that morning before leaving for work. His younger son was last seen around midday.
When police officers arrived and entered the house, they found Sudha and Siddharth dead. Siddharth was found on the first floor while his mother’s body was in the finished basement.
Police said both victims had “obvious trauma.” The cause and manner of death are not known; the findings of the Chief Medical Examiner are still pending.
The investigators are also working to determine whether a weapon was involved and, if so, what kind of weapon might have been used.
Teen Allegedly Fled in Mother’s Car
Arjun was not at the residence when officers arrived. He had left the property in his mother’s Honda Accord, police said.
A search operation was launched with law enforcement agencies alerted and information about the teenager and the vehicle circulated as authorities searched for him.
The search ended early Wednesday when police in Wayland were called to an unrelated alarm at a parking lot. Officers found the Honda Accord near the parking lot with Arjun inside.
He was taken into custody without incident.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Acton Police Chief Douglas Sturniolo oversee the investigation into the deaths and the circumstances leading up to Arjun’s arrest.
What did Arjun search on ChatGPT?
The detectives have also discovered digital activity that they say raised concerns about Arjun’s behavior in the period before the alleged killings.
"The subsequent investigation indicates that Arjun (Aravind) had recently been demonstrating concerning behavior, including using the internet and ChatGPT to make searches for theoretical ideas or fantasies about killing his family,” the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office said.
They said Aravind had also used ChatGPT while developing ideas described as “Gothic novel-type of stories.” The activity included creating characters and asking questions about fictional or hypothetical scenarios involving threats and violence against family members.
Investigators are looking at the online activity as part of the larger case. But authorities have not said that the ChatGPT searches, by themselves, establish a motive or prove that the digital activity directly led to the alleged killings.
The significance of the searches will likely depend on the evidence gathered in the investigation (forensic findings, digital records, witness accounts, etc.).
Charges and Court Proceedings
In addition to the two murder counts, Arjun faces two counts of assault and battery involving a household or family member, two counts of assault and battery, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and motor vehicle theft.
He was expected to appear at Lowell Juvenile Court Wednesday. Because that court does not have jurisdiction over murder cases, the murder and connected assault charges are expected to be addressed later in Concord District Court.
The case is still under investigation, and prosecutors are expected to provide more evidence in court.
The Indian government has not disclosed where the family came from.
The allegations against Arjun Aravind remain unproven unless and until proven in court. The medical examiner’s report and the continuing police probe will provide more details about how the mother and son died and what happened inside the family home before the teenager was arrested.
