An Italian military base in Iraqi Kurdistan was struck by a missile overnight, raising fresh concerns that the ongoing conflict involving Iran is expanding across West Asia. The attack targeted a facility in Erbil, where Italian troops are stationed as part of international efforts to support regional security forces.
According to Italy’s Ministry of Defence, the missile hit the base but no casualties were reported among the roughly 300 Italian soldiers deployed at the site. The troops quickly moved into bunkers after warning systems detected the incoming strike.
Troops Safe After Missile Strike
Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto confirmed that all personnel were safe and that the situation was under control. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also reassured the public that Italian troops stationed in the region had not been harmed in the incident.
The base in Erbil is primarily used for training Kurdish security forces and supporting international coalition missions in northern Iraq.
Conflict Spreading Across the Region
The attack comes as the broader conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel continues to escalate, raising fears that the war could spread across multiple fronts in the Middle East.
Iran has previously launched missile and drone strikes targeting military installations and strategic sites across the region, including U.S. bases, Gulf ports, and other allied facilities. Analysts warn that the growing number of attacks could destabilize several countries in the region.
Iraqi Kurdistan Becomes Strategic Flashpoint
Northern Iraq, particularly the Kurdistan region, has become a sensitive security zone due to the presence of foreign troops and military infrastructure. Iranian forces and allied groups have reportedly carried out attacks in the region amid the broader geopolitical tensions.
Security experts say the region’s proximity to Iran and the presence of Western military forces make it a potential flashpoint as the war expands.
Rising International Concern
European and regional leaders have expressed concern that continued strikes could draw more countries into the conflict. Military reinforcements and additional air-defense systems are reportedly being deployed across parts of the Middle East as governments prepare for possible escalation.
For now, the Italian government says it is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with allies to ensure the safety of its troops stationed in Iraq.
