Jeff Bezos Wants 1 Trillion Humans in Space: His Bold Vision for the Future of the Solar System

Jeff Bezos has a very ambitious vision for humanity’s future: a solar system of as many as one trillion people.

The Amazon founder and space entrepreneur believes that expanding human civilization beyond Earth could open a new era of innovation and creativity and science with a much broader scope.

Bezos has argued that Earth has physical limits when it comes to population, energy and industrial activity.

Rather than let those limitations limit human development, he thinks he’ll bring much of humanity’s heavy industry and eventually large populations into space.

"I would love to see a trillion humans living in the solar system," Bezos has said. He believes a population of that scale would dramatically increase the chances of producing extraordinary thinkers and creators.

His famous example compares a future space civilization to the concentration of historical geniuses. “If we had a trillion humans, we would have at any given time a 1,000 Mozarts and a 1,000 Einsteins,” he said.

And the idea is based on a simple statistical argument. A much larger human population would create more scientists, engineers, artists, entrepreneurs and researchers at once. Bezos thinks this could lead to a civilization with an enormous amount of talent and ideas.

He also sees the solar system as having resources that could support such a civilization. Asteroids, moons and planets can have vast quantities of materials that could be used for construction, manufacturing and energy production.

“Our solar system would be full of life and intelligence and energy,” Bezos said, arguing that humanity could eventually use the resources available throughout the solar system to build an economy that is far beyond that achievable on Earth alone.

Bezos’ space vision is closely tied to Blue Origin, the aerospace company he founded. The company is developing reusable launch systems and technologies that will provide a much lower cost to travel to outer space.

Bezos has repeatedly preached the idea of a world where millions or billions of people could eventually live and work beyond Earth.

One concept he has promoted is that of large rotating space habitats instead of building cities directly on planets.

These huge structures could give artificial gravity and possibly Earth-like environments, so that people could live in space while Earth would be left as a safe home.

For now, a trillion-person solar civilization is far beyond our technological capabilities. So far, humans have not yet built an infrastructure to sustain life beyond Earth; the transportation, radiation, life support, food production, and construction are much more difficult to build.

But Bezos’ vision highlights a larger question about humanity’s long-term future. So instead of seeing space as a place for astronauts to visit, he sees it as an extension of human civilization.

Will humanity ever reach a trillion people in the solar system Bezos thinks that expanding into space will ultimately allow future generations to have access to resources, opportunities and possibilities on a scale that is difficult to conceive of today.
