JioHotstar has expanded its global presence with the launch of its international streaming service in the United Kingdom, Canada and Singapore, a significant step in the platform's bid to bring Indian entertainment and sports to audiences outside the country.
The expansion will give those viewers in these three international markets an exclusive experience in JioHotstar and further strengthens the platform in a rapidly growing global streaming space.
As Indian-language entertainment has gained a significant audience among overseas Indians as well as viewers for Indian films, TV, reality shows and sports, JioHotstar will be able to grow and take the Indian content to a new level globally. And these countries also have large Indian and South Asian communities, so they are strategic areas for international streaming expansion.
JioHotstar is a joint venture operated by Reliance and Disney in India, JioStar, a media and entertainment company. In India, JioHotstar was launched in conjunction with JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar. Since its launch the platform has been primarily focused on entertainment (films, television shows, original content and big sporting properties).
The international service will further expand that content ecosystem to viewers outside India. Indian streaming platforms have become a more attractive platform for overseas audiences who have no need to depend on traditional television and movies or international TV networks to follow popular television series, movies and sporting events. JioHotstar’s overseas push is therefore coming at a time when streaming consumption is moving towards digital platforms which offer specific content in terms of communities and viewing preferences: that has started to become more and more so and more in a digital format.
Sports are also expected to be a major factor in JioHotstar’s international strategy. Indian sports content has a huge audience in the countries where Indian people are abroad and in particular cricket. Major cricket tournaments and Indian sports events can appeal to the huge number of Indian fans as well as Indian-born people in countries with a large Indian population. A single streaming service can bring these foreign viewers into the Indian sports and entertainment world and thus bring JioHotstar to Indian sports live on an Indian digital platform.
The UK, Canada, and Singapore are also a big international market for Indian entertainment companies as their audiences and digital infrastructure are very different from ours. The launch of a dedicated JioHotstar service will allow viewers to watch Indian content in the way they want it to be delivered to them. It’s part of a trend of the media and entertainment industry in India becoming more internationalised and streaming platforms in general start treating overseas audiences as an opportunity to be exploited as a growth market and not a secondary one.
The launch is happening in a time of intense competition in the OTT space. Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ have huge investments in the local language programming and regional content market in the international OTT market and Indian content is growing in demand even more outside the home market. JioHotstar is in this environment and is able to stand out with its Indian entertainment and sports content.
JioStar’s overseas spread may also increase the commercial value of its content library. Indian movies, TV shows, original productions and sporting properties have a wide range of potential viewers and will be popular among diaspora communities. As more people turn from TV to streaming and move to platforms where culturally relevant content can be easily accessed across borders, there will be a lot of opportunities for subscriber growth across borders.
And in the UK, Canada and Singapore for example, what I am trying to do is not just expand our world. And with streaming habits changing and audiences being more comfortable accessing content from different countries, we will see JioHotstar’s global presence.

What is the best way to do so is to provide content availability, subscription and sports rights, user experience and the platform will serve not just Indian-based viewers, but also international customers.
The new service development in these markets could also help the platform grow and the last time, it will need to be a good way to expand globally. For viewers in the UK, Canada and Singapore, then, JioHotstar will be one of the alternative sites to watch Indian entertainment and sports globally, in a global streaming environment.
