The accident involved a passenger van and a heavy truck. Officers say one of the vehicles may have crossed into the other lane at the time of the accident and the cause of the crash is still being evaluated.

Emergency response was quick after the call of distress and involved mangled vehicles, and many passengers in the damaged vehicles were also trapped in them.

Rescue teams worked for hours to free survivors and transport the victims to local hospitals. Medical personnel said many of the wounded are still in critical condition and there’s fear that the death toll could rise in the next few days.

Four of the dead were American citizens but their identities were not disclosed until family members were notified. The other victims are Mexicans, and the families of the American victims are helping the U.S. Consulate with legal procedures.

Images of the crash site show severe damage to both vehicles and emergency workers using hydraulic rescue tools to pull people out of the twisted metal. Traffic on the highway was suspended while investigators worked to clean it up.

Mexican transportation and law enforcement officials have launched a formal investigation into the accident. Experts are looking for factors such as vehicle speed, mechanical failure, driver fatigue, and weather conditions in the fatal collision, the officials said. Both vehicles have also been thoroughly tested, they said.

For Mexico, road accidents are still a major public safety problem, and highways have experienced fatal crashes of buses, vans, and freight trucks regularly. Drivers are urged to follow traffic rules, avoid speeding, and if they are to drive long distances, the police say, keep the car in good order to stay safe.

The tragedy has prompted condolences from local officials and community leaders who have expressed sympathy for the victims’ families. Emergency services were praised for their rapid response to survivors and the aftermath of the crash under difficult conditions.

The U.S. Embassy will provide consular assistance to the families of the deceased Americans and work with Mexican authorities on the investigation. In both countries, officials have emphasized the need to understand the facts behind the crash to prevent future incidents.

Witnesses and motorists who may have captured the incident on dashboard cameras are being sought out now, investigators said. Now, authorities will be there to care for the injured, find and identify all victims, and figure out what was behind the tragedy that has left families grieving on both sides of the border.
