Qatar Distances From Iran War, Calls for Peace and Coexistence

Since the Middle East is still in midst of ongoing crises, Qatar has seen its tones change drastically distancing itself from any direct involvement in the war and pressing for peace and regional co-existence with Iran.

And Qatar has indicated the country is not directly involved in the mediation or military operations, although they are talking to global and regional actors about it. This is a measured but tactical move as tensions keep on happening in the neighborhood.

In a moving comment on long-term stability in the Middle East, a statement from the Secretary General for Foreign Affairs and Social Development in Qatar highlighted that long-term coexistence in the Middle East can take place with Iran “very long time” to come and “total destruction is not an option.” This showed the practical reality, though: in the time that all the countries in the region have lived together for what we see now it must be one that not only has the military on both sides but as much as we’re all here.

A Shift Toward De-escalation

Qatar's stance reflects concerns in the Gulf that long-term conflict may lead to greater frustration and potential losses of lives that will be borne in a country of few states in particular when they take a stance like Qatar. While some regional nations are talking about tougher military responses which the international community would argue for, some of our regional states are talking about stronger military responses; while Qatar has been vocal for dialogue and diplomacy.

In what they emphasize, war cannot be a solution and talks can do so only, with negotiations as the only pathway forward, officials have insisted repeatedly. But unchecked escalation threatens not just Middle East security and global energy markets but global energy supply and energy systems, the country adds.

Strategic Neutrality

Qatar is traditionally viewed as a mediator, but even there is fear and caution. This may be due to the very real security threats to Gulf nations in the conflict (missile and drone strikes and so on) and the conflict.

Instead of backing up, Qatar says it will be a voice of restraint—acknowledging geopolitics all too often, but demanding all parties back away.

Coexistence Over Conflict

But the focus on coexistence is especially great. Qatar is reaffirming that no nation can be eradicated from the region and neighbors need to actually make peace forever.

This approach is sharply in contrast to rising military rhetoric elsewhere and is an interesting reminder of the broader divide by which countries react to the crises - using force vs solving things, diplomacy vs. diplomacy.

What it means going forward?

Qatar’s message rings true at the moment of the war. With military action ramping up, talks for dialogue have become increasingly urgent now. The likelihood that these appeals will lead to real peace is doubtful.

And Qatar’s position provides a reminder, in today’s world, that the main source of stability in the long run lies not in ruin or war but coexistence.
