Trump Issues Ultimate Ultimatum: Death Penalty for Nancy Guthrie’s Kidnappers

President Donald Trump has issued a chilling warning to those responsible in his escalating response to the abduction of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie. In a phone interview for the New York Post Monday, February 16, the President announced that unless TODAY show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is returned alive, he would instruct the Department of Justice to pursue the death penalty.

"The Most Severe Penalties"

When pressed directly whether the “most severe” consequences spelled federal prosecutors pursuing capital punishment in the event the case ended in death, President Trump said, “The most, yeah that’s true.” This is a powerful escalation in pressure from the federal government. Under federal law, kidnapping that leads to the death of a victim carries the potential to lead to the death penalty, a tool the administration appears eager to use to deter the abduction.

Two Weeks of Uncertainty

Nancy Guthrie last appeared on the evening of January 31, 2026 in the Catalina Foothills area near Tucson, Arizona. Since her disappearance, the case has swept across the country:

  • Evidence: Investigators have investigated several things that pose as potential suspects, including a black nitrile glove that was discovered near the home, which the police say contains DNA currently being processed by the FBI.
  • Ransom Notes: Several alleged notes have surfaced but their authenticity has been increasingly scrutinized by federal profilers.
  • Federal Resources: Trump said earlier on Truth Social he’s set “ALL Federal Law Enforcement” to be at the family and local law enforcement’s full disposal.

A Family’s Hope

The President’s ultimatum followed just hours after Savannah Guthrie’s tearful plea. In a video posted on Sunday, a tearful Guthrie contacted the captors, saying, “It’s never too late to do the right thing.” As the family has stuck to a campaign of an appeal to the “essential goodness” of the abductors, the White House has embraced a line of maximum deterrence. The FBI has also doubled the reward for information that leads the way to Nancy’s location to the tune of $100,000.

What’s Next in the Investigation?

And when the search begins in the third week, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI are combing through more than 4,000 tips. The Catalina Foothills still get its focus, along with some of the routes leading to the Mexico border.
