Trump Calls Sundar Pichai ‘Monster’ At White House AI Meeting, Tells Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei To ‘Be Careful’

Donald Trump had an interesting encounter with Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai during an unusual speech to the White House conference of technology executives that took place in which he called Sundar Pichai a “monster,” while he told the Indian-born business leader a “monster” who is a “monster” to him when he spoke to reporters and the media on the White House stage. He also went up to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei at the meeting and said to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, “be careful,” he said “Be careful,” to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.

The remarks came on September 29 when Trump hosted several tech and AI experts at the White House for talks around the future of artificial intelligence. The meeting included people from Google, Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, and Nvidia and involved AI development, safety, and the US technology industry.

Trump’s Unusual Praise For Sundar Pichai

Trump pointed out to technology executives at the White House lunch when he spoke with reporters. He then looked at Sundar Pichai and said the Google CEO was a “monster” and said, “monster,” clearly a compliment to compliment him, but also a reminder of tech leaders at the same time.

Trump said people might not know who the executives are despite their huge worldwide influence. He then singled out Pichai and told reporters that he was a “monster” and that “nobody knows” him. Pichai smiled during the exchange and later responded with a joke of his own, saying he hoped the description would be a “better tagline” than being called a monster.

Trump also referred to Pichai by his first name, telling reporters that all they needed to know was “Sundar.” The comments brought an informal moment to an otherwise significant gathering among some of the world’s biggest technology companies.

Pichai is one of the most prominent figures in the global technology industry as CEO of Google and its parent company Alphabet. And he was in the White House meeting with other top technology players as the Trump administration considers how we should deal with the rapidly developing AI field.

Trump Tells Dario Amodei To ‘Be Careful’

Trump also spoke with Dario Amodei, CEO of AI company Anthropic. After pointing out to Amodei, Trump told the Anthropic chief executive to “be careful,” which drew laughter from Amodei.

Amodei’s public focus on AI safety was a backdrop of that interaction. The Anthropic CEO has repeatedly worried about the potential risks associated with increasingly powerful AI systems and has asked for more caution as companies build advanced models.

Amodei answered the question in the White House by talking about the global competition for artificial intelligence. He explained that winning the AI race is also necessary to secure the technology.

His comments were consistent with one of the central themes of the White House gathering: how the US can maintain leadership in artificial intelligence while addressing safety, security and the possible social impact of increasingly capable AI systems.

White House AI Accord

The meeting also resulted in a voluntary agreement between major AI and technology companies. Trump announced that leading companies had agreed to principles intended to strengthen internal safety controls and independent oversight of AI development. Google, Anthropic, Meta and Nvidia all agreed to internal controls and independent auditing, Reuters reported.

It comes as AI regulation is a hot topic in Washington. Trump’s central argument has been that the U.S. should not allow the development of technology if it is to have a competitive advantage in the AI sector in the world and has stressed the importance of America. At the same time, technology leaders have publicly stressed the need for safeguards as AI systems grow stronger.

The White House gathering thus brought executives with different perspectives on the pace and oversight of AI development. But with companies so aggressively battling against each other to create more advanced systems, cybersecurity, unauthorized access and other potential risks have also taken part in the policy discussion.

Why The Meeting Matters For AI

The presence of Pichai and Amodei at the same White House event reflects the increasing importance of technology executives in discussions about America’s AI strategy. Google is competing in a variety of artificial intelligence areas, Anthropic has built its business around advanced AI models and has put great emphasis on safety research.

The meeting also occurred shortly after Trump had a private dinner with Amodei, their first one-on-one meeting. The two have previously been at odds over AI development and the role of government oversight.

For Pichai, the "monster" comment became one of the most memorable moments of the event, and Amodei’s “be careful” exchange highlighted the differing personalities and viewpoints on the AI debate. But behind the lighter moments, White House discussions centered on much larger policy questions about how quickly artificial intelligence should develop and what safeguards should accompany that growth.

As AI companies continue to compete in a hyper-competitive battle for dominance of increasingly powerful systems, governments and technology leaders are still going to be involved in discussions on safety, innovation and oversight. The White House meeting showed how closely related those issues are now in the hands of some of the world’s most influential technology executives as well, with some of the world’s most powerful tech leaders directly involved in the conversation.
