Before becoming one of the world’s most recognizable political leaders, Volodymyr Zelenskyy had already had a successful career in entertainment.
The Ukrainian president was a comedian, actor, screenwriter and producer, and his rise to political fame was closely linked with a TV character who also made somewhat of an unlikely ascent.
Zelenskyy first came to fame on comedy and television. He was a member of the creative team of Studio Kvartal 95, a leading Ukrainian entertainment company.
He had a huge audience from the comedy shows and performances and the TV shows in which he did so long before he got into politics.
Probably his most famous role was in the television series Servant of the People. Zelenskyy played Vasyl Petrovych Holoborodko, a regular schoolteacher who suddenly becomes president of Ukraine after his video criticizing corruption goes viral.
The fictional story later became strikingly similar to Zelenskyy’s real-life political journey.
That he made the unusual transition from television to politics made his story internationally known. Zelenskyy entered Ukraine’s presidential election in 2019 and defeated the incumbent Petro Poroshenko by a large margin.
🇺🇦 This is what Zelensky was doing before he became president 🤣

His campaign painted him as an outsider who could disrupt the established political system.
But old clips and photographs from Zelenskyy’s entertainment career still appear on the internet and receive humorous responses from social media users.
Some posts recall his early comedy performances and his eccentric stage appearances and some compare his life prior to politics with his time as president.
Viral posts may not have context, and so it is important to distinguish between real archival material and misleading captions.

Zelenskyy’s career in entertainment is well documented but individual images or clips circulating online may be presented without information about when or where they were recorded.
The contrast between Zelenskyy’s former career and his current role is what makes his story particularly unusual.
Very few national leaders have gone from being comedy stars on television to becoming the head of state during one of Europe’s most significant geopolitical conflicts.
His story also underscores the influence entertainment can have on political communication. Zelenskyy already had a very public image and a large audience, and had been speaking directly to the people before he started his political career.
Zelenskyy’s career turned from comedy stages and television studios to the presidential office in a remarkable way.
His past still gets attention online and gets so much attention when old entertainment footage surfaces and goes viral.
In the end, the most amazing aspect of the story is not a single viral photo or funny post, but the dramatic transformation of a popular entertainer into Ukraine’s president.
