Police arrested a 21-year-old man for allegedly murdering a 61-year-old woman, robbing her jewellery and placing her body in a suitcase in Ramohalli Lake located near Kumbalgodu in West Bengaluru in an impressive breakthrough in the sensational case of suitcase murder.
The arrest comes just hours after the discovery of the victim's body sent shock waves across Karnataka.
Jayamma, a resident of Kengeri, who was reported missing by her family after she left her home on the afternoon of July 15, has been found by the police. Her family filed a missing person complaint on July 16 saying she had not returned home after leaving at 3:35 p.m. and she had not answered a number of attempts to contact her from her mobile phone which was switched off.
The case took a dark turn Tuesday when police found a suitcase floating in Ramohalli Lake. When they opened the suitcase, they found the body of an elderly woman stuffed inside. The victim was identified by family members as Jayamma.
At first, investigators believed the woman had been murdered at another place before her body was transported and dumped in the lake to cover up the crime. Police then opened a murder investigation and started collecting forensic evidence by looking at CCTV footage in different places including Kengeri, Ramohalli and Kumbalgodu.
Investigators say the intense investigation led to the arrest of a 21-year-old suspect who killed Jayamma and then stole her jewellery. Police believe robbery might have been one of the motives behind the crime, but officials have said that all possible motives are being investigated.
Investigators are also seeking to determine what happened when the murder occurred. The accused, in police eyes, killed the victim, removed her valuables and then placed her body in a suitcase and tossed it into the lake to destroy evidence and delay identification, officials said.

Legal experts note that if the allegations are established during the trial, the accused could be charged under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for murder, robbery, destruction of evidence, and other applicable offences. Forensic findings, witness statements, digital evidence, and material recovered from the investigation will be used in the prosecution as the case proceeds through the judicial process.
