Heavy monsoon rains have paralyzed the city of Ahmedabad and caused widespread flooding in the city, putting a damper on transportation and roadways.
Emergency rescue operations are in full swing since the city has been brought to a standstill by the monsoon rains, and flooded streets and homes in Ahmedabad are inundated.
Of particular concern is Ahmedabad Airport, where floodwater inundated parts of the airport, with floodwater washing out parts of the airport as torrential rain continued to build up after hours of rain. The waterlogging affected travel operations, and flight delays were caused as airport officials rushed to keep it safe.

The extent of the flooding has transcended transportation hubs. The high-end residential areas in the city were inundated, and emergency agencies were placed in action. The Indian Army, along with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), have been deployed to help stranded people and provide relief in the worst-affected areas.
Even road connectivity has taken a huge hit. Flooded highways and main roads have been closed as water levels rose, making roads unsafe to travel on.
Drivers have been stuck in submerged areas of road, and road access has been closed. Officials have advised residents to avoid unnecessary trips until they can proceed home.
The heavy rains have disrupted normal life in Ahmedabad. Some schools in areas have been closed, and office attendance has dropped drastically as commuters have struggled with flooded streets and waterlogged roads. Public transport services have been disrupted or diverted due to the heavy rains, impacting thousands of residents.
Municipal authorities are also working on pumping stations to clean out excess rainwater in the city by continuously pumping water out. Emergency teams are checking rivers, lakes, and drainage channels to prevent further flooding in low-lying areas.
Residents in vulnerable areas in the city and in the vicinity have been told to be alert and to follow official advice.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Gujarat is expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next few days. Heavy rainfall has been linked to an active monsoon system, and conditions could be challenging if the rain continues, the weather department said.
Businesses have also suffered significant losses as floodwater entered shops, warehouses, and commercial establishments. Many traders reported damaged goods, and roadside vendors canceled operations to avoid flooding in the city’s streets, which reduced customer access to the marketplace.
Emergency services are on high alert throughout the city. Citizens are advised to contact emergency services for rescue, medical help, or emergency transportation.

Electricity supply was temporarily suspended in some areas; in other places, waterlogged electrical infrastructure led to accidents.
Experts say rapid urban expansion, poor drainage systems, and more intense weather events associated with climate change have made cities like Ahmedabad more prone to urban flooding. Better infrastructure and long-term planning are needed to better handle extreme rainfall events.
The administration is working to restore normal life and reopen major transportation corridors while ensuring the safety of the people as rescue and relief operations continue.
In case of emergency, citizens should remain indoors unless necessary, stay updated with weather bulletins, and avoid sharing unverified information that may cause panic during the ongoing emergency.
