Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the Barapullah Phase-3 elevated corridor in Delhi on Tuesday, September 29, 2026. The long-delayed infrastructure project is expected to improve the traffic flow between East Delhi and South Delhi by providing a signal-free route between Mayur Vihar Phase-I and Sarai Kale Khan.
The inauguration was attended by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Verma and other officials. Shah also inaugurated the Mukarba Chowk underpass as part of a wider set of road infrastructure projects in the capital.
Faster Route From East Delhi Towards South Delhi
The Phase-3 corridor connects Mayur Vihar Phase-I with Sarai Kale Khan and joins with the Barapullah corridor. The elevated stretch extends to around 9 kilometres and connects to AIIMS and South Delhi.
The corridor could reduce travel time between East Delhi or Noida and AIIMS from 35–40 minutes to 15 minutes, depending on traffic and starting point, said officials.
The project also will improve movement around several major traffic corridors including the NH-24, DND Flyway and Ring Road.
Project includes Cycle Track and Pedestrian Facilities
The corridor was designed not only for motor vehicles but also for other road users. There is a cycle track and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure in place, officials have said.
The project also includes a special bridge structure over the Yamuna floodplain. The structure forms an important part of the connection between the elevated sections.
These features are designed as additional transport options, and to further connect several key parts of the capital.

A Project Delayed for More Than a Decade
The Barapullah Phase-3 project has a long construction history. It was approved in 2014 and construction began in 2015. It was expected to be completed in 2017 but the project was delayed because of land acquisition, environmental approvals and technical challenges related to the Yamuna floodplain.
The delays also increased the estimated cost. The revised project cost has been reported to be around ₹1,635 crore, compared to the original sanctioned cost of about ₹1,260 crore.
Other Delhi Road Projects Inaugurated and Launched
The Barapullah Phase-3 corridor was part of a larger infrastructure programme in Delhi. Amit Shah also inaugurated the Mukarba Chowk underpass, while foundation stones were laid for projects like the Modi Mill-Kalkaji flyover extension and the Savitri Cinema half-flyover.
The projects will also increase road connectivity and alleviate traffic congestion at several important junctions in Delhi.
