Warring was asked in Chandigarh about reports about his resignation as Punjab Congress president. He declined to comment on the matter and said he would speak when the time was right.

“I don’t want to comment on anything. When the time is right, I will let you know,” Warring said.

His comments come at a time of uncertainty over the leadership of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC). Recently, it has been claimed that the Congress high command has decided to replace Warring and has communicated it to him. Warring has offered to resign from the position.

There had been speculation on the possibility of a reshuffle in the Punjab Congress this week. The party appointed Sachin Pilot as its general secretary in charge of Punjab affairs in September and replaced Bhupesh Baghel. Pilot also met senior leaders and office-bearers as part of a review of the state organisation ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

When asked whether he would go to the Congress office in Delhi, Warring again kept his response brief. “Some matters are internal,” he said, indicating that he did not want to publicly discuss the ongoing organisational developments.

The possibility of a change of the Punjab Congress leadership has been discussed for several months. In June, then Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel had publicly dismissed speculation of an immediate leadership change and said the party would contest the next Assembly election collectively.

The issue resurfaced as Sachin Pilot took over Punjab affairs. Reports indicated that the party was having discussions regarding appointing a new state president. Some names are being mentioned in reports as potential contenders for the post like Vijay Inder Singla, Pargat Singh, Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria and Gurjeet Singh Aujla.

The leadership question comes at a crucial time for the Congress as Punjab heads towards the 2027 Assembly elections. Warring is taking over the state unit and the party is trying to work through differences among senior leaders and factions.

Yet Warring has not publicly admitted his resignation. His words suggest that any official announcement on his position will follow from the party or himself at a later stage. The election of the next Punjab Congress chief is left to speculation.
