The Andhra Pradesh government has announced plans to ban social media access for children under the age of 13 within the next 90 days, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said while addressing the state assembly on March 6.
The proposed move is aimed at protecting young children from online risks and excessive screen exposure. The government is also considering whether similar restrictions should apply to teenagers between the ages of 13 and 16.
Social Media Ban Within 90 Days
Speaking in the assembly, Chief Minister Naidu said the government is committed to introducing the restriction soon.
“Definitely, we will make sure that within 90 days those below 13 years of age are not able to use social media,” the chief minister stated.
The policy would require mechanisms to ensure that children below the age threshold cannot create or operate social media accounts.
Officials say the rule is part of a broader effort to promote healthier digital habits among children and protect them from potential online harm.

Government Considering Extending Ban to Teenagers
While the immediate plan focuses on children under 13, the government is also debating whether the ban should be extended to teenagers aged 13–16.
The chief minister said discussions are ongoing and the government will take a final decision after reviewing expert opinions and public feedback.
If extended, the rule could become one of the strictest social media regulations for minors in India.
Focus on Digital Safety for Children
Authorities say the proposed restriction is designed to address concerns about:
- Online addiction and excessive screen time
- Cyberbullying and online harassment
- Exposure to harmful or inappropriate content
- Mental health impacts among young users
Experts and policymakers increasingly believe that early exposure to social media platforms can negatively affect children’s emotional and psychological development.
Growing Debate Over Social Media Use by Minors
The announcement comes at a time when governments around the world are exploring stronger rules to regulate children’s access to social media.
Several countries and regions are considering policies such as age verification, parental controls, and usage restrictions to ensure safer online environments for minors.
Implementation Challenges Ahead
While the proposal has been welcomed by many parents and educators, experts note that enforcing such a ban could be challenging. Authorities would need to work with technology companies and digital platforms to develop effective age verification systems.
The Andhra Pradesh government is expected to consult technology firms, child welfare experts, and education authorities before finalizing the implementation framework.
If implemented successfully, the move could set a precedent for other Indian states looking to regulate social media access for young users.
