The flood situation in Assam still remained serious as more than 3.10 lakh people in 11 districts are still suffering from the effects of the rising river levels and persistent rainfall, the ASDMA said in the latest preliminary report.
The report said that 11 districts and 36 revenue circles have been affected by the ongoing floods. The affected districts are Biswanath, Charaideo, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon, Sivasagar and Tinsukia.
A total of 758 villages have been inundated, affecting 3,10,807 people. The flooding has also impacted agriculture, with more than 14,411 hectares of crop area reported to be underwater.
There are 52 relief camps to provide shelter and support to displaced people. In addition, 12,720 people are currently in the relief camps and 9,160 people have been evacuated from flood-hit areas using boats, the disaster management report said.
The report also confirmed one flood-related death in Charaideo district.
The situation has also affected urban areas. Several parts of Kamrup Metropolitan District including Satgaon, Sawkuchi, Notboma, Boragaon, Maligaon and Chandmari have reported urban flooding. Waterlogging and higher water levels have also affected parts of North Guwahati in Kamrup district.
While no new landslides were reported in the latest update, several incidents had occurred the previous evening in areas like Gotanagar, Kamakhya, Gor Pandu Kumarpara Gaon and Maligaon.
Rescue and relief work continues in the worst affected areas. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force have been deployed in Charaideo, Sivasagar and Jorhat.
According to ASDMA, 289 NDRF personnel are working with 40 boats, while SDRF teams are using 62 boats for evacuation and relief operations.
There are also a number of rivers that continue to flow above the danger level. Brahmaputra at Neamatighat, Buridihing at Khowang, Dikhou at Sivasagar, Disang at Nganglamuraghat and Dhansiri at Golaghat and Numaligarh are still above the danger zone.
The continued rise in water levels has raised concerns that the flood situation will worsen if heavy rainfall persists in the coming days.
Officials are performing rescue operations and relief in affected areas and helping people in vulnerable areas. Residents in the affected zones are advised to be alert and to follow orders from local authorities.
With hundreds of villages inundated and thousands of people displaced, Assam is still besieged by floodwater. The focus remains on evacuating people from the most vulnerable areas, providing shelter, and ensuring that essential goods reach the areas cut off by floodwaters.
