In Chintamani city in Karnataka’s Chikkaballapur district, a shocking attack on a college student is being investigated. A first-year engineering student was reportedly attacked by a group of about 10 people who came to her house and assaulted her after a previous fight.
The victim, S. Meghana, is in her first year of BE studies and is also in charge of teaching dance to children at a local school in Chintamani. The incident happened at her residence in Ashraya Layout and has caused residents to be concerned about her safety.
According to the complaint, the incident started on the evening of the previous day at around 4:30 PM when Meghana was going towards her two-wheeler, two people named Karthik and Vinod teased and harassed her. Meghana confronted them and slapped them during the altercation.
Following the incident, Meghana returned home and told her mother what had happened. But the situation escalated later in the evening.
At 8:30 PM, Karthik, Vinod, Shalini, Kavya and several others came to Meghana's house in Ashraya Layout. The complaint filed by the victim says the group forcefully entered and launched a violent attack on Meghana.
The attackers then questioned Meghana about the earlier confrontation and allegedly said, “How dare you hit us?” before physically assaulting her. The complaint also claims that the group used blades and other dangerous weapons during the attack.
Meghana had serious injuries in the attack; the attackers stabbed her in the abdomen with a blade, ripped her clothes and issued death threats. Family members and residents were shocked by the brutality of the incident.
In addition to the seriousness of the case, portions of the alleged assault were recorded on mobile phones. Police are currently studying the video footage as part of the investigation.
Meghana was rushed for medical treatment after the attack. She got first aid in a hospital in Kolar and was transferred to the Mother and Child Hospital in Chintamani for further treatment. Doctors are monitoring her condition, and officials have not yet released detailed information about the extent of her injuries.
Based on the complaint, Chintamani Town Police have registered a case against the accused. An investigation has been launched, and all persons involved are being sought.
Police said they will take legal action against those found responsible after witness accounts, medical reports and available video evidence are collected and evaluated. Police also want to trace and apprehend other members of the group who participated in the attack.
The incident has generated widespread outrage in the region, with residents demanding strict action against the accused and enhanced protection for women and students. To establish the sequence of events and hold those responsible, police will continue to work on the case.
