Belagavi Crime: Man Allegedly Killed by Friend Over Party Demand in Bailhongal Village

A tragic incident from Karnataka's Belagavi district has shocked residents after a seemingly trivial dispute over a celebration party allegedly ended in the murder of a man by his close friend. The incident took place in Vannur village of Bailhongal taluk, where a long-term friendship was also killed when there was an argument during Moharram celebrations.

The deceased is Hanumanthappa Itagi, a village resident of Vannur. Local sources said that Hanumanthappa earned money on odd jobs and loved and cared for his elderly parents. His death has left the village bereaved, and violence against minor disputes has been on the rise.

Police said the accused, Vishwanath, was a close friend of the deceased and belonged to the same village. Investigators learned that Vishwanath had welcomed a baby boy around five months ago. Since then, Hanumanthappa had been asking him to organise a celebration party, a common social custom among friends in many rural communities, they said.

Vishwanath kept postponing the celebration despite repeated requests, police said. About two months ago, he also purchased a new motorcycle, after which Hanumanthappa is said to have renewed his demand for a party. The repeated teasing and public reminders gradually created tension between the two friends, they say.

Officials said Hanumanthappa frequently asked for the party in the presence of other villagers and joked that Vishwanath had neither celebrated the birth of his son nor the purchase of his new bike. The accused's public comments have embarrassed the accused and contributed to the growing resentment, investigators say.

The friction culminated in the Moharram celebration at Vannur village in the two days before the incident. Many villagers gathered for the festivity, and Hanumanthappa once again mentioned the promised party. What started as a verbal exchange soon blossomed into a heated argument.

The fight was reported to have turned physical during the scuffle, police sources said. It is alleged that Hanumanthappa's finger accidentally hit Vishwanath's eye as they struggled. Enraged over the incident, the accused overpowered his friend and attacked him repeatedly after knocking him down, and then picked up a stone that would hit him in his head, police said.

Dundappa, the deceased’s uncle, said both men had drunk alcohol before the fight. “What started as an argument tragically turned into a fatal assault,” Dundappa said. The family has appealed for the police and the state government to take action against those involved and prevent incidents from happening again in future to prevent such a tragedy, he said.

Police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances leading to the murder. Officers are recording statements from eyewitnesses, investigating the scene, and collecting forensic evidence to establish the exact sequence of events. Alcohol consumption as a factor in the escalation of the situation, authorities say, is also under investigation.

The shocking incident has generated widespread discussion across Belagavi district, with many residents expressing disbelief that a dispute over a celebration party could allegedly end in such a brutal crime. The case is a devastating reminder of how small disputes, compounded by anger and intoxication, can escalate into irreversible acts of violence.

Police have said that the investigation will be thorough and that legal action will be taken based on the evidence gathered. We will have more as the investigation progresses.
