In an instant police of Bengaluru, four persons have been arrested in a series of mobile thefts during high-profile RCB vs SRH match. The suspects were alleged to have targeted cricket fans under the pressure of heavy crowds inside the stadium (Indian Press service, 10/26/12).
The thefts were reported during a moment when thousands of spectators were leaving the stadium after a match on the night, Cubbon Park Police said. Taking advantage of a packed atmosphere, the people behind them stole phones of fans and made it across the line by themselves, police officials said.
Police filed a case after receiving numerous complaints and started investigating. Using the video camera installed in the neighborhood, police were able to track the suspects’ routes of movement and find out who was at fault for the theft.
According to police, they arrested four defendants from the operation and recovered 21 stolen phones from brands across the globe. In fact, one of the suspects and his group appeared to have met on crowded public events to conduct the theft, investigators found.
Police also indicated that more people may be involved in the racket to date. Another search is in the works to catch and arrest the remaining suspects.
The arrested people are being interrogated to find out even more about their operation, like whether they had taken part in similar theft cases in the past.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of citizens during large-scale events such as IPL matches, and as usual, they must be protected and have safe belongings in such large crowds, police spokesman Ashkad Hussain said on condition of anonymity.
